_aABSTRACT: This study is focused on developing the algorithm that is suited for compressing scanned documents in the Office of the University and Board Secretary of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila for archiving. The two algorithms used are DEFLATE, which is used for text files, and JBIG2 which is used on images. DEFLATE is a lossless compression algorithm capable of compressing text and images. This algorithm is derived from two other algorithms, Huffman Coding which creates a binary tree of characters and assigns codewords to it and LZ77 which reduces repetitive data by giving a pointer of length of the matched string and its distance from the string. The other algorithm JBIG2, is an image compression standard for bi-level images such as monochrome black and white images, suitable for both lossy and lossless compression. It works by segmenting the image into regions of text, regions of halftone images, and regions of other data, and compressing each of them separately using different methods. The study aims to detect and remove noises present on scanned documents.
