_aThis study was carried out in two mangrove areas along the Manila Cavite coastal road to determine the species composition and analyze the forest structure of these mangrove stands. Barangay San Dionisio, Parañaque City and Barangay Daniel Fajardo, Las Piñas City provided the appropriate sites for this study, when started from the month of September 2004, and ended in the month of January 2005. Transect line plots method was utilized in this study that presented the quantitative description of the species composition and community structure of the mangrove forest in the study areas. The mangrove leaves were collected for identification and herbarium preparation. Forest strucutre analysis involved the determination of relative density, relative frequency and relative dominance. Relative dominance required the measurement of DBH (diameter of the tree trunk at breast height). The species diversity was described according to the Shannon Index. Furthermore, several physico-chemical parameters such as pH, salinity and air temperature were monitored and were correlated with the species diversity of the two mangrove areas. After three months of sampling, four species were found , two belonging to family Rhizophoraceae, one from family Avicenniceae, and the other one from family Sonneratiaceae. Avicennia marina and Rhriziphora mucronata had relatively good distribution. However, Sonneratia alba and Rhizophora stylosa were poorly distributed . Avicennia marina was discovered to be the most dominant species. T test showed a significant difference in the established transects in terms of relative density. Pearson Product - Momet Correlation Coefficient revealed a slight correlation between the species diversity and all the three physico-chemical factors measured (pH, salinity and air temperature). _u |
