_b _b _c _aABSTRACT: Antibiotic resistance has become a global threat due to the emergence of new diseases, evolution of multi-drug resistant pathogens, and misuse of antibiotics. To combat this, new classes of pharmaceuticals are continuously being synthesized and screened. In particular, metallodrugs are of high interest due to the inmate biological properties of metal ions that could potentially augment the physicochemical and pharmaceutical properties of the organic moiety. In this study, chromium(III), iron(III), silver(I), and zinc(II) complexes of cefaclor have been synthesized and then characterized using conductometric, gravimetric, and spectroscopic methods. The antibacterial activities were determined against the test organisms Escherichia coli UPCC 1195 and Staphylococcus aureus UPCC 1143 via agar well diffusion method. Characterization tests have confirmed the formation of distinguishable products with the presence of the expected metal atoms for each metal-cefaclor complex as well as the presence of the expected heteroatoms in the organic ligand. Gravimetric and IR data suggest that the chromium(III) and silver(I) complexes of cefaclor have a 1:1 metal:ligand ratio, while the iron(III) and zinc(II) complexes have a 1:2 metal:ligand ratio. The zinc (II)-cefaclor complex showed comparable antibacterial activity with the uncomplexed ligand against E. coli and S. aureus, while the chromium(III), iron(III), and silver(I) complexes exhibited decreased antibacterial activities. _u |
