_b _b _c _aFT7725 ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study was to examine the correlation between relationship satisfaction and academic self-confidence among gay and lesbian college students. The study also assessed the levels to which participants were satisfied with their relationships, both in terms of their relationship satisfaction and their social and familial support. Additionally, it determined the levels of participants academic self-confidence. Participants of the study were 152 self-identified gay and lesbian college students between the ages of 18 and 24 who were openly out to at least one social group (family, friends, school, or the public) and had either been in current relationship for at least three months or had formerly been in a relationship that lasted for at least three months. Two standardized questionnaires were employed: Gay and lesbian Relationship Satisfaction Scale (GLRSS) and Academic Self-Confidence Scale (ASCS). Pearson's correlation coefficient was performed to determine the correlation between relationship satisfaction among gay and lesbian college students and their academic self-confidence. The results showed that both overall relationship satisfaction of gay and lesbian students and their academic self-confidence are high levels and there is a significantly weak positive between these variables. Between the two domains of the GLRSS (Relationship Satisfaction; Social and Familial Support), only the social and familial support domain resulted in a week positive correlation with academic self-confidence. These findings were used as a basis for a proposed Gay and Lesbian Relatedness Program which aims to foster and maintain the fulfilment of the need for relatedness, as emphasized by Relationships Motivation Theory amongst lesbian and gay students to ensure a continuous growth in their academic pursuits. _u |
