_aABSTRACT: The study determined the correlates of freshmen students performance in mathematics. The following concerns were pursued: (a) the profile of the freshmen students in terms of gender, age, course, type of school graduated from; (b) to determine the performance of the students in college algebra and attitude of the students towards mathematics; (c) to find out if there is a significant correlation between the profile of the students, attitude towards mathematics and the performance in college algebra. The researchers used the descriptive-correlation method of research to describe the profile of the freshmen student of Pamantasan g Lungsod ng Maynila, their attitude towards mathematics and their grade in college algebra. The respondents of the study were 329 randomly selected college freshmen students enrolled during the second semester of SY 2009-2010. Data were gathered from each student after securing permission to conduct the study, from the professors and university administration. The researchers made a letter of request to ask permission from the present dean of the College of Science, Ms. Procula Amarillo, to gather final grades in college algebra of the respondents. The students attitude towards mathematics was determined through an instrument done by Dr. Maxima J. Acelejado. Data were treated statistically using Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS). Major conclusions of the study are: (a) Majority of the students are female. (b) Most of the freshmen students are between 16-17 years of age. (c) Most of the students got a grade between 2.25-2.50 in college algebra. (d) Most of the freshmen students are from public and private high school. (e) Over all, freshmen students have a moderately favourable attitude towards mathematics. (f) The performance of the students in college algebra does not correlate with their age, gender, and attitude towards mathematics. (g) The performance of students in college algebra correlates with the type of school graduated from and course. On the foregoing findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are offered: (a) The freshmen students should study hard because having a positive or negative attitude towards mathematics doesn't influence the performance in mathematics. To those who have negative perception about mathematics, they should know that it doesn't affect their performance. What is important is how you study and work hard to achieve better performance. (b) faculty should become conscious that they have to continue motivate their students through them extra attention, understanding, showing interest and giving recognition so that the students would feel that they would always be a part of the class. They should know that even if the students have negative perception towards math, still they can also perform better in algebra. (c) Other study which is related to this study must be conducted in other schools. They have to determine other factors that correlate the performance in college algebra. They may consider the instructor, home, peer, and school factors.
