_b _b _c _aABSTRACT: This study used sodium alginate (SA) extract from Sargassum ilicifollium brown seaweed as a polymer blend to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to produce hydrogel films. Through alkaline extraction, the yielded sodium alginate extract from the said species was computed to be 10.21%. It was further characterized using FTIR-ATR and was confirmed to have the presence of the same major functional groups with the standard SA. The optimization of the hydrogel films was done through five (5) different ratios of SA/PVA, namely 0/100, 5/95, 10/90, 20/80, and 30/70, wherein a 4.00% (w/w) citric acid-a crosslinking agent used, was added. A successful crosslinking reaction in the synthesis of hydrogels was observed based on the functional groups present from the FTIR-ATR analysis. The SA/PVA ratios of the samples with the highest obtained result in each test were found to be 10/90 for gel fraction with an average value of 95.36%, 20/80 for swelling study with average values of 402.22%, 484.13%, and 522.33% at 10, 20, and 30 minutes, respectively, and 5/95 for the tensile strength with an elongation of 182.23% and tensile strength of 14.16 MPa. Such results implied a good degree of crosslinking formed and the hydrogels highly satisfactory swelling capability. Although having statistically insignificant differences in swelling results, this suggests that all films produced are equally absorbent and can potentially be used for various applications.
