_b _b _c _aOne hundred ninety-seven senior nursing students, purposively sampled from six nursing institutions, participated in this mixed research, a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The intention of this study was to determine the preferred career choices of the respondents and their level of competency performance in the four competencies which are: client centered care (CCC)- Duties/Task, empowering (EMP)- knowledge / experience, enhancing (ENHC)- skills/performance, and enabling (ENA)- abilities/practice. Utilizing a research-made instrument patterned, and adopted from the national competency standards for Filipino nurses done by the Commission on Higher Education, and after fulfilling the validity and reliability requirements for the same tools, individual administration was conducted among the students of the participating schools. Moreover, an in-depth interview technique was used to collect data on the preparedness of the senior nursing students in their chosen career in nursing. The study further tested the hypothesis of no significant difference existing between the ;eve;s of competencies of the respondents and their career choices. Applying percentage, weighted mean, chi-square and Spearman rho tests on the research data, the study revealed the following: (1) the competency level of the senior nursing students registered high in the area of client centered care; (2) very high in the competency levels in the other three areas; (3) the most preferred career choices of the students i clinical nursing, followed by community health. Nurse educator is the least preferred choice; (4) significant relationships were found with age on all four nursing competencies performance and gender and choice of nursing as a course; and, (5) no significant difference exists between the level of competency and chosen career path across all the profile variables. The study concludes by noting the limitations of the nursing students in the different competency areas covered. Policy directions are formulated to address these concerns toward improvement in nursing education. _u |
