_b _b _c _aAbstract: This study is designed to survey the different problems that faculty members in institutions of higher learning, particularly, in the College of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration and Education meet. It attempted to answer the following questions: 1. What are the problems of faculty members in the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business Administration and College of Education relating to: a) administrative practices and policies b) Working Conditions c) Interrelationships with peers, students, administrators and non-academic personnel 2. Are the perceptions of the faculty on these problems significantly associated with their professional background in terms of: a) educational attainment b) length of service c) faculty rank d) tenure e) college where faculty belongs 3. How satisfied are the faculty in the three colleges of the respondent universities with their work environment relating to: a) administrative policies and practices b) working conditions c) interpersonal relationship d) faculty development e) opportunity to engage in faculty socio-cultural activities 4. Is there a significant relationship between the perceived problems and the overall level of job satisfaction of the faculty? Procedure The descriptive survey method was used in this study. Questionnaires were distributed to faculty members in a government-supported university and in two non-government - supported tertiary educational institutions. Teachers from the College of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, and Education were the respondents. Three hundred and six teachers participated in this study: sixty (60) teachers from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, one hundred eighty-one (181) faculty from the University of the East , and sixty-five (65) members of the faculty from the Philippine Christian University. In order to supplement the data obtained from the questionnaire, the interview method was used. Treatment of the Data To find out the problems of the faculty, the number of teacher respondents in each category, e.g., problems concerning management policies, working conditions, and interrelationships, percentages and means were computed and interpreted accordingly. To test the null hypotheses on the association between teacher's problems and environmental variables and between faculty problems and professional background, the chi-square test was used. Findings The salient findings of the study are as follows: 1. Problems of faculty members from the three universities 1.1 Of the problem areas relating to administrative policies and practices, the highest mean was obtained on promotion/rank. 1.2 Problems of faculty members in the three colleges relating to working conditions show an overall mean score of 2.82, considered moderately serious. Areas with high mean score are those of teaching equipment/classrooms and salary. 1.3 In the three colleges, the problem area relating to interrelationships that is most bothersome is interrelationship with students, followed by interrelationship with college administrators. All these are problems that are moderately serious. 2. Relationships of perceived problems with professional background. 2.1 Perceived problems on faculty evaluation and promotion and problems on interrelationship with non-academic personnel are influenced by educational attainment. 2.2 Problems on interrelationship with co-workers and peers are influenced by tenure. 2.3 Length of service and faculty rank do not influence are perceived problems of the faculty. _u |
