_aABSTRACT: STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: This study aims to analyze the content of Pilipino Funny Komiks Magasin for Children from January to June 1999. Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What are the contents of Funny Kimmiks based on the following criteria: a) Practicability b) Practicality c) Attractiveness d) Comprehension e) Persuasion 2. How is Funny Komiks treated in terms of: a) Humor b) Value-laden c) Sensationalism d) Violence 3. What are the features / sections and their space distributions in Funny Komiks? 4. What are the recommendations that can be offered to the publishers of Funny Komiks to make it more responsive to the needs of children? FINDINGS The researcher discovered different approaches on the contents of the publications. Hence, a classification of contents into three groups was made namely: Cartoon Series, Cartoon Fillers, and Comics Fillers. This is to determine the contents of the Pilipino Funny Komiks. Then, in the analysis of the Code Guide sheet, the separation of the positive/negative criteria and treatment items was utilized to identify easily the data obtained from the publication. It turned out that all the items are positive too except for violent treatment which has negative items and sensationalism of comic fillers group of the publication since it is not concerned with the exaggerated styles of the magazine. Based on the results sorted out from the code guide sheet, the findings were as follows: 1. Criteria a. The Practicability of cartoon series of stories showed that the capability of doing or using the message for the benefit of young readers and the appropriateness of the publication to children revealed that all stories and fillers of Funny Komiks are practicable to readers. However, this criteria is not the priority of the publication for it uses bilingual messages. b. The Practicality showed that the cost and frequency of the issue of the magazine are very practical; yet, in the location where it can be bought the answer is plainly practical for children since the places are risky for young buyers as observed by the researcher. c. Attractiveness refers to the interest, the appeal, the attention, and the enjoyment that the messages stimulated to the audience. The findings showed that the style used is appealing to children readers because it is enjoyable, and it provides colorful illustrations to meet the children's interest. d. Comprehensibility as perceived by the researcher is easy to understand, and the illustrations and layout can be easily understood. e. Persuasion showed low result in doing the suggested behavior because it needs more investigative action on the part of the researcher. However, it had a probable convincing power for children to exhibit the attitude of characters in the stories. This was based on the response given by pupils and the support answer given by parents in the Focus Group Discussion. 2. Treatment a. Humor is a treatment in which messages are made funny for the children readers. The children laughed because of funny messages that entertain them. Funny messages are few because the publication contains several action adventure stories. This maybe due to the trend followed by the publication. b. Value laden is the message of ideals or principles which the material produces like sense of values that are highly regarded by people. It has character building that may help improve attitude or habits of readers, moral values that may develop correct behavioral beliefs, Filipino cultural and family values, love for country, and educative information. These were written in the different sections of the publication. c. Sensationalism is the exaggerated approach of the publication that produced a strong reaction or intense interest from the audience. The sensational technique on the cover pages attracted most of the children readers. The interest of the children was evidently proven because the pupil readers interviewed were encouraged to look forward to the next issue of the publication. 3. The features/sections found in the Pilipino Funny Komiks Magasin for Children has action adventure stories, fantasy strips, funny family strips, and animal strips with moral value formation in the messages. These moral values are present in some sections of the cartoon series/fillers group of messages made especially in the comics fillers. Most of the sections have one to three pages except for Kenji story under cartoon series group which has four pages. CONCLUSION: The Funny Komiks Magazine is attractive since it has the highest result in the three groups of tables made by the researcher. This means that the publication is profit oriented. However, sensationalism has the highest overall percentage score because of the result it obtained from a group of content as comics filler of the publication. It revealed informational and educational type of messages. The practicality which refers to costs and frequency is just appropriate to children readers; yet, the location is quite risky for young buyers. Comprehensibility of the messages is appropriate to children readers. In fact the practicability of the publication is good for messages are made easy. The persuasion of the messages used by the publication is quite effective on attitudinal aspect but not proven on behavioral questions of the code guide since this investigation needs more time for the researcher to spend with the pupil readers of Funny Komiks. Humor treatment on the other hand can be found in some sections like action, adventure or animated stories depending on the type of fun messages except the educational type. Hence, funny messages can really make pupil readers laugh and enjoy. With regard to the sensational aspect, it primarily attracts young readers in such a way that they eager to buy and get a copy because of the sensational messages used by the publication on front covers. Lastly is violence. It is minimally written depending on the needs of the story. There are some violent illustrations which are usually found in the action stories; however, most fighting scenes are cut by words or captions called Onomatopoeia. The statistical results on criteria and treatment used by the publication are validated by the responses of pupil readers, parents of pupil readers, and teachers. Most findings correlate with the investigation made by the researcher. The publication has action adventure stories, fantasy strips, animated stories, funny family strips, informational and educational type of messages. Then, among all stories and sections found in the publication, Kenji series story has the highest page scores while others have one to three pages. RECOMMENDATIONS: First, the publisher should be careful in printing the messages for the children publication. These messages must be responsive to the needs of the growing children. Second, the researcher may conduct more researches on this topic so that children publications may continuously improved. Third, the educators must be critical, vigilant and concern on the children's welfare as readers of this publication. They should continuously uphold the development of moral values for children. All recommendations were individually carried out based on the results gathered from the criteria and treatment of the code guide sheet used in analyzing the publication. The holistic concern is that the publication should not be only monitored commercially since it plays a pivotal role in molding the attitude and behavior of growing children who cling to the modern innovations man. It is important to note that publishers must make sure that messages made had Filipino values.
