_aABSTRACT: Statement of the Problem This study was an attempt to assess the readiness of Engineering Freshmen for Calculus. Specifically, the study aimed to answer the following questions: 1. What is the performance of FEU Engineering freshmen as expected by the FEU Mathematics teachers? 2. What is the actual performance of the FEU Engineering freshmen in Mathematics as measured by the diagnostic test? 3. How does the expected performance of the FEU Engineering freshmen compare with their actual performance in Mathematics? 4. What are the mathematics problems and difficulties encountered by the Engineering freshmen in their pre-calculus subjects? Procedure A diagnostic test was administered to the student participants while a questionnaire was administered to the teacher respondents. The performance of the student respondents in the diagnostic test in terms of their mean percents of correct responses constitute the actual performance of the participants for Calculus. On the other hand, the teachers responses to the questionnaire served as a measure of the expected performance of the same respondents for the said course. The difference between the actual and expected mean percents of correct responses were subjected to a t-test. Treatment of Data The mean and the t-test were used in the treatment of the results. To determine the significance between the expected and the actual performance of the FEU Engineering freshmen in Mathematics, the t-test was used. The mean differences were tested at the .05 level of significance. Findings The study revealed that the mathematics teachers expected the students to be adequately prepared for Calculus, but the respondents did not perform to the level expected by the teacher-respondents. Hence, there was a significant difference between the actual and expected performance of the FEU Engineering freshmen for Calculus. The students have problems and difficulties in the following topics: graphical analysis, problem analysis, simplification of fractions by proper cancellation, finding the root of a polynomial equation, linear inequalities, equations involving absolute values, exponents and radicals. Conclusions The findings indicated that in general, FEU engineering freshmen were considered inadequately prepared for Calculus. However, the mathematics teachers expected them to be adequately prepared for Calculus. Since there was a significant difference between the actual and expected performance of the FEU Engineering freshmen for Calculus, therefore, the expectation of the mathematics teachers on the performance of the students may not always be accurate. Recommendations Engineering freshmen who are not mathematically equipped should avail of the free tutoring classes, the FEU Mathematical Society is offering. Those students who honestly feel that they cannot tackle the rigorous mathematical requirements of the engineering course should consider shifting to another course fitted for them. Seminars or in-service training for mathematics teachers should be encouraged for the improvement of their teaching methodology. Further researches on the correlation between the performance of the students in the pre-calculus and calculus subjects is highly recommended.
