_b _b _c _aABSTRACT: The study was conducted to gather baseline information about the heavy metal content of three species of fish, Oreochromis mossambicus (Tilapia), Claias batrachus (Catfish), and Hypostomus plecostomus (Janitor fish/Sucker mouth catfish) in Estero de San Miguel, Manila and further identified the status of its water quality. Results showed that among the three species of fish on December 2013, janitor fish accumulated the highest concentration of Hg (0.21 mg/Kg) which exceeded the permissible limit set by BFAR (FAO No. 210, 2001). On February 2014, among the three species of fish, catfish the highest Hg concentration (3.65 mg/Kg) followed by tilapia (2.60 mg/Kg) and janitor fish (0.90 mg/Kg) Hg concentrations in three species of fish on February 2014 exceeded on the permissible limit set by BFAR (FAO No. 210, 2001) Hg concentrations in different species of fish, tilapia, hito and janitor fish on December 2013 and February 2014 showed no significant difference (computed f< critical value= 5.14, α = 0.05). Test of difference on Cd and Pb concentrations was not applicable since values were below the detection limit of the instrument, whereas, Hg concentrations in fish species on two sampling periods, December 2013 and February 2014 showed no significant difference. Concentrations of heavy metals in water of Estero de San Miguel were observed to be less than the permissible limit set by DENR Administrative Order, 1990-34, whereas, test for relationship was not applicable since values of Hg concentration of Pb and Cd concentrations were less than the reporting limit of the instrument. Physiochemical characteristics of water in Estero de San Migule in terms of nitrate, phosphate, BOD and DO exceeded the acceptable level whereas temperature and pH level of water in Estero de San Miguel were within the accepted value of DAO, 1990-34. Therefore, water quality of Estero de San Miguel, Manila was developed. This is to provide information about the status of water bodies such as esteros and its implications to human health. _u |
