_b _b _c _aABSTRACT. This study was conducted to determine the student nurses' perceptions of stress and coping strategies as a basis for the development of stress management program. The researchers used a descriptive research design and a researcher-made questionnaire was utilized as a tool for finding the results shown in this research. The study used a sample of 194 junior and senior Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila during the academic year 2009-2010. The gender, birth order, and year level of the respondents were used as profile variables. Results showed that psychological sources of stress were perceived as the most stressful to the respondents. Main stressors include over scheduling and preparing for or taking exams. Results also showed that the respondents perceived prayer as the most effective coping strategy which is classified as an emotion-focused coping strategy. Least effective strategy was biofeedback. The research rejected the null hypotheses that there is no significant relationship between the respondents' perceptions to stress when they are grouped according to demographic profile and there is no significant relationship between the coping strategies and demographic profile of the respondents. However, the research accepted the null hypothesis that there is no significant relationship between the respondents' perceived sources of stress and their coping strategies. _u |
