_aABSTRACT: This study sought to describe the lived experiences of older persons in a residential institution, and understand the meaning attached by the participants to their own lived experiences, using phenomenological description of themes and patterns. There were 10 older adults who participated in the study whose aged ranged from 70 to 95 years old, with the female comprising the majority of the informants. A purposive sampling technique was used to identify the participants. Qualitative data were obtained through in depth interview using tape recorder to capture participant's responses, and transcribed verbatim to identify themes and patterns. Collaizzi's (1978) phenomenological methodology was used to analyzed the data. The findings of the study revealed seven themes and two sub themes, which were verified from the exhaustive description. These were: Life Review, A Process of Reminiscing the Past, Connecting with the Divine Source, the Creator, Coming to Grip with Death and Coping with Physical Limitations, Source of Personal Meaning Sub theme: Companionship and Belongingness Sub Theme: Safety and Security A Perception of Oneself Relief from Being a Burden Family. It can be concluded that the experiences of the older persons in the institutions were unique for each of the participants, characterized by individuation and heterogeneity, a hallmark for the participants of the study. There was no significant meaning attached by the participants to their experiences of the ageing process, but their institutionalization has provided significant meaning to their lived experiences. It is recommended that nurses continuously become advocates for the older persons and that the findings of the study should be considered when planning and providing care to aged clients. It is also recommended that the administrators of residential institutions, like the Hospicio de San Jose, further promote meaningful interactions among older persons, their families and care givers. Maximizing participation of family members in the care of their older members during their visit also suggested. The policy makers or concerned groups must uphold the cause of older persons, specifically, those institutionalized.
