_aABSTRACT. This study attempted to determine the factors influencing the self-care management practices of diabetes patients seeking consultation at a selected government diabetes clinic in Metro Manila particularly at MANDIWA diabetes clinic. The researcher tested if there is a relationship between personal profile - age, gender, civil status, educational attainment, employment economic status, and family history of diabetes mellitus and Self Care Practices as to Information seeking practices, Diet management practices, Exercise practices, Medication practices, Blood sugar monitoring practices, Hypoglycemia management practices, Food care practices, Stress management practices, Exercise practices, Foot care practices, Stress relationship between Self-Care Practices and Health Status in terms of Body Mass index(BMI) Waist Hip Ratio (WHR) Blood Pressure, Electrocardiograph (ECG) Findings, Glycosylated Hemoglobin A 1 c (HbA1c) Level. Creatinine Level, Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase (SGPT) Level, Fundoscopic Findings, Foot Assessment Findings. And Frequency of Hospitalizations. The descriptive method was employed in the study. A total of forty-five (45) respondents were taken from Mandiwa Diabetes Clinic. Convenience sampling was utilized in choosing theses respondents. The data were gathered through checklist-questionnaire and an interview schedule designed by the researcher. A total of 45 respondents were taken using convenience sampling technique. The data gathered were processed using the SPSS and EPI Info Version 6 packages for the statistical measures: frequency and percentage distribution, mean, standard deviation, and correlation coefficient. Profile data showed that majority of the respondents are aged 46 and above, are female married, unemployed and have had diabetes from five 1 to 5 years, have reached high school have an average monthly family income ranging from P-3001-6000 and have a family history diabetes mellitus. With regards to the health status profile, majority of are overweight and obese, have waist hip ratio above normal, have high blood pressure, have normal ECG findings, have HbA1c level above normal ranges, have creatinine level within normal ranges, have normal fundoscopic findings, foots assessment findings, and were never hospitalized during past year. The performance levels in all sub categories self-care practices is moderate except for blood sugar monitoring practices in which the level of performances is low. Upon testing hypothesis at 0.05 degree of significance, relationship was established between personal profile and self care practices. Self Care practices were also found to be significantly related to health status. Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended the inclusion of diabetes self care practices in the discharge planning among hospitalized diabetes patients, diabetes care training to nursing students and professional nursing staff, educational programs regarding diabetes self care using tri-media be conducted in schools, offices, community health centers, hospital and clinics, a subsidized diabetes health care services, establishment of diabetes clinics and improvement of existing ones and participation of family members in diabetes care. It is also recommended that this study be replicated in other hospitals or clinics using other medical condition and using a larger sample. Self Care is also applicable for diabetes prevention. Future nursing research can investigate general health care practices of non diabetic family members of diabetes patients as well as that of elementary school children.
