_b _b _c _aABSTRACT. This study aimed to propose a health promotive program for high school students in Batangas City that would be beneficial in enhancing their health behavior towards HIV/AIDS. The proposed program anchored its basis from the needs which arose from the responses in the study where students are most weak. Its focus was directed towards correcting misconceptions and strengthening attitudes to bridge and then totally remove existing gaps. The study sought answers to the following sub-problems: 1. What are the socio-demographic profile of high school students in Batangas City in terms of: 1.1 age; 1.2 gender; 1.3 religion; and 1.4 parents' highest educational attainment? 2. To what extent do high school students of Batangas City understand HIV/AIDS related knowledge such as: 2.1 biology; 2.2 prevention; and 2.3 transmission? 3. To what extent do high school students of Batangas City manifest HIV/AIDS related attitudes such as: 3.1 avoidance of people with HIV/AIDS; 3.2 compassion towards people with HIV/AIDS; 3.3 intended preventive behavior; 3.4 adoption of a healthful lifestyle; and 3.5 getting oneself involved? 4. Is HIV/AIDS related knowledge independent of the socio-demographic variables? 5. Are the HIV/AIDS related attitudes independent of the socio-demographic variables? 6. What program can be developed that will enhance health-promoting behavior of high school students of Batangas City towards HIV/AIDS? The study group was composed of 400 selected high school students from Batangas City aged 12-19 years old during the school year 2003-2004. The descriptive-correlative design was used with four-point Likert scale questionnaire as the main source of the data. Sample was determined using the multi-stage sampling technique. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied using frequency distribution, percentage, weighted mean, standard deviation and chi-square test of independence. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was utilized to compute and analyze the data. The findings of the study revealed that: 1. The high school students in Batangas City are generally young with more female students in number than male students. Majority are Catholics and parents are mostly college graduates. 2. There is a greater extent of understanding towards HIV/AIDS related knowledge, however, low scores are found when it comes to symptoms, treatment, complication and transmission. 3. Generally, there is a greater to greatest extent of HIV/AIDS related attitude expressed by the respondents, nevertheless, lesser degree of manifestation is noted on two items on avoidance of people with HIV/AIDS 4. Significant independence is evident between: HIV/AIDS biology and age, gender and parents' highest educational attainment; HIV/AIDS prevention and religion; and HIV/AIDS transmission and the four variables mentioned, indicating acceptance of the null hypothesis. Acceptance of the alternative hypothesis is found between biology and religion; and prevention with age, gender, and parents' highest educational attainment. 5. Certain correlations between HIV/AIDS related attitudes and the socio-demographic variables yielded acceptance of the null hypothesis. Significant independence is seen between: avoidance of people with HIV/AIDS and religion and parents' highest educational attainment; compassion towards people with HIV/AIDS and religion and parents' highest educational attainment as well; intended preventive behavior and gender; adoption of the healthful lifestyle and age, religion, and parents' highest educational attainment. 6. The findings of the study served as a good basis in developing the framework of the proposed HIV/AIDS health promotive program. Based on the findings, it is concluded that a health promotive program is indeed necessary to enhance health behavior of the high school students, therefore, it is recommended among other things that the proposed program be implemented. _u |
