_aABSTRACT. Statement of the Problem: To propose a training program based on the assessment of knowledge and skills by task and the attributes of the existing training program for the barangay health workers of Naic, Cavite. This study specifically focused on answering the following questions: 1. What is the personal profile of the respondents in terms of: 1.1 age 1.2 civil status 1.3 length of residency in place of work 1.4 educational attainment 1.5 socio-economic status 1.6 length of time involvement as Barangay Health Workers 1.7 training need 2. What is the extent of attainment of the terminal competencies in terms of knowledge and skills by task expected of the Barangay Health Workers being described as to: 2.1 health and nutrition education 2.2 maternal and child health 2.3 screening of health and referral 2.4 treatment of simple cases and provision of drugs 2.5 follow-up 2.6 environmental sanitation 2.7 control of endemic disease 3. How do the profile variables of the respondents relate to the attainment of the terminal competency on the knowledge and skills by task expected for the Barangay Health Workers? 4. Based on the assessment and findings, what training program can be developed for the Barangay Health Workers? Hypothesis There is no significant relationship between the extent of attainment of the terminal competency on the knowledge and skills by task expected of the Barangay Health Workers and the personal profile as to: 1.1 age 1.2 civil status 1.3 length of residency in place of work 1.4 educational attainment 1.5 socio-economic status 1.6 length of time involvement as Barangay Health Worker Sampling and instrumentation: The total number of respondents is fifty nine, 50% of the 118 registered Barangay Health Workers of Naic, Cavite selected through systematic sampling technique. This study utilized the analytic type of research design by using survey method. The questionnaire which contains the assessment of the personal profile and the knowledge and skills by task adopted from the manuals used by the Department of Health and a non-government organization, serve as an instrument and had provided answers to specific questions presented in this study. In accomplishing the survey, a five (5) point rating numerical scale of assessment was used with the qualitative interpretation of the items resulting from a formulated numerical scale utilized to determine the level of performance of the BHW and the attributes of the existing program. Findings: The following findings were based on the assessment of the respondents: 1. The profile shows that 39% of the respondents belong to the age bracket of 46-53 years old, mostly are married with 76%, and 44% have achieved the elementary level of formal education. Most of them are classified as extremely low in terms of economic status with a salary scale of Php >3000. Majority of the respondents stay in their place of work for 24-46 years for 51% and 66% involved themselves for ten (10) months to six (6) years as Barangay Health Workers 2. The Barangay Health Workers achieved a low level of performance on the aspect of maternal and child health, and screening of health and referral. The 74% of the respondents agreed that first aid measure to common cases found in the community is of another training needs. 3. The relationship between the profile variable and the task expected for Barangay Health Workers revealed: a. There is a significant relationship between age of the respondents and the aspect of maternal and child health, treatment of simple cases and provision of drugs, and control of endemic diseases. b. There is a significant relationship between the civil status and the aspect of screening of health and referral. c. There is a significant relationship between the educational attainment and the aspect of health and nutrition, treatment of simple cases and provision of drugs and the environmental sanitation. d. There is a significant relationship between the length of time involvement as Barangay Health Worker and the aspect of health and nutrition education, screening of health and referral, and follow up. 4. The aspect of maternal and child health and screening of health and referral resulted as weakness attributes of the training program revealed by the qualitative interpretation set. Conclusion: In the light of the findings presented, the researcher could conclude that there is no significant relationship between the profile variables and the extent of attainment of the terminal competencies expected for the Barangay Health Workers as to: age (on the aspect of health and nutrition, screening of health and referral, treatment of simple cases and provision of drugs, follow-up, environmental sanitation, and control of endemic diseases); civil status (on the aspect of screening of health and referral); length of residency in place of work (all areas of the knowledge and skills by task); educational attainment (on the aspects of maternal and child health, screening of health and referral, follow-up, control of endemic diseases); socio-economic status (all areas of the knowledge and skills by task); length of time involvement as BHW (on the aspects of maternal and child health, treatment of simple cases and provision of drugs, environmental sanitation, and control of endemic diseases). This study also revealed that majority of the BHW are at the age bracket of 46-53 years old, married, and have achieved the elementary level of formal education. Most of them live in their respective community for 24-46 years but may involve themselves as BHW from ten (10) months to (six) 6 years and with the monthly family income scale of Php >3000. The aspect on maternal and child health and screening of health and referral revealed as weakness attributes of the existing program and considered as low level on the performance of the BHW. Majority agreed that giving of first aid measure and rational drug use should also be included in any training program. Recommendations: Based on the analysis of the findings and conclusions of this study, the researcher recommends the following: 1. The members of the health team should consider the following selection criteria for BHW, as main participant of the training program and, thus individuality of focus as to its' course content may be given consideration: 1.1 age 43-56 years old (on the aspect of maternal and child health, treatment of simple cases and provision of drugs, control of endemic diseases) 1.2 civil status: married (on the aspect of screening of health and referral) 1.3 educational attainment: elementary level/graduate would do (on the aspect of health and nutrition education and treatment of simple cases and provision of drugs) 1.4 length of time involvement: 0-6 years (on the aspect of health and nutrition education, screening of health and referral, follow up) 2. The community should include the findings of the study pertaining to the profile variables to ensure the proper selection for BHW whom they recommend to cater to the needs of their own community. 3. The training agencies (members of the Rural Health Unit and other non-governments) can make use of the result of this study as reference to revise the course content of the existing training program for BHWs of their own locality. 4. Similar studies can be conducted to assess the level competencies of BHWs from the perspective of the experts such as their supervisors and trainors.
