_b _b _c _aABSTRACT: This study was conducted to determine the communication skills competency at 105 nurses at Sta. Ana Hospital as an input to personality development program. Results showed that the generally the nurse-respondents were 20 to 30 years old, mostly female, use Tagalog as a means of communication, have worked for 6 to 10 years, and assigned at the Wards (Medicine/Pedia/Surgery/OB-Gyne); most of the nurse's communication skills competency were interpreted as high of competency except for effective communication techniques, client and family teaching and conflict management which have moderate extent only: there were no statistically significant difference between all the communication skills competency when grouped according to age, gender and dialect; however when grouped according to length of service and area assigned, all the communication skills competency also have no significant difference except for conflict management. It is recommended that for staff nurses to become empowered by participating in the Personality Development Program to increase their self-awareness with regards to their communication competency and how it affects their professional practice; for the patients to give feedback and make the staff nurse become aware of their weakness in communication skills; for head nurses/nurse supervisors to help determine different factors that contributes to communication lapses in their respective areas then use remedial measures to stifle the problem at its root; for hospital administrative to use the Personality Development Program proposed by this study thereby decrease the probability of error in their hospital patient care caused by lapses in communication among hospital staff; for the other health team to use this study as a reference material for to know how the extent of communication skills competency among nurses differed when grouped according to demographic profile. They can also use this study as guide for decreasing the probability of errors in patient care caused by lapses in communication among hospital health care team members for the future researchers to use this study as a reference material for in terms of nurses' communication skills competency. _u |
