_aABSTRACT. Statement of the Problem: The study aimed to compare the perceptions of nurses and patients on the actual patient care rendered by nurses at Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center. Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions: 1. What is the socio-demographic profile of the nurses and patients in terms of: a. Age b. Sex c. Religion d. Educational attainment? 2. How do the patients and the nurses perceive the actual nursing care given as to: a. Assessment b. Planning c. Intervention d. Evaluation? 3. Is there a significant difference between the perceptions of the patients and that of the nurses on the actual nursing care given? 4. Is there a significant relationship between the perceptions of nurses and patients on actual nursing care rendered by nurses and their socio-demographic profile? This study was concerned and limited to with the actual nursing care rendered by nurses as perceived by the clients and nurses in a selected hospital in Manila. The study was conducted from July to October 1999 at Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center utilizing the descriptive method of research. The subjects of the study were 100 patients, and 50 nurses from different wards namely: Medical Ward, Surgical Ward, OB-Gyne Ward, EENT Wrad and Pay Ward. Purposive random sampling technique was utilized in selecting respondents based on the criteria of the researcher. Respondents were asked to answer the questionnaire-checklist of the study. A rating scale was established for the purpose of interpreting the respondent's perception on the actual nursing care rendered. Statistical treatments were computer aided using software statistica. Results showed that the most of the nurse respondents in the institution are aged 21-30 female and catholic. Patients on the other hand are college levels and graduates, female, and catholic ages below 30 years old. Patients perceive the actual nursing care given by nurses as Effective Care in all phases of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Nurses perceive the actual nursing care rendered as Effective Care for the Assessment Phase and Very Effective Care for Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation Phase of the nursing process. There is no significant difference between the perception of nurses and patients on the actual nursing care rendered by nurses at 0.05 level of significance. However, correlation between perceptions of nurses and patients on actual nursing care during implementation and evaluation, showed strong, significant, and positive correlation. Implementation and evaluation were not significant at 0.05 level. This means that there is no direct relationship between expected and actual nursing care. Although nurses perceive higher than patients with the actual nursing care rendered, nurses should consider to reassess and evaluate some factors that might affect patients' perception within Effective Care Level of patient's satisfaction. This identified problem is considered to highly affect patient's expectation with the actual nursing care. The researcher would like to recommend the following: Recommendations Based on the conclusions the following are recommended: 1. Nursing service administrators in government hospitals must develop a tool on patient satisfaction based on the actual nursing care given. 2. A replication study could be done with different parameters and some factors which were not cited in this study to validate the findings or the quality of the actual nursing care in the private and government hospitals in the Philippines. 3. The study can be distributed to the different government and private hospitals of the Philippines so that the nursing service administrators can compare and be aware of the results of the study on the actual nursing care based on the patients' satisfaction so that more efficient and more effective nursing care can be rendered to the entire nation for the benefit of the Filipino clientele. 4. This study could be used to encourage the creation of programs on patient satisfaction on actual nursing care, learning objectives and modifications of policies in nursing education to enhance the efficiency of the nursing faculty members in nurturing their student nurses with effective training and educational pattern in the practice of the professional nursing. 5. Develop the ability of the nursing care provider to enhance patient satisfaction by improving nurse-patient relationship focusing on individual health teachings involving family members and review the basics of establishing nurse-patient relationship and develop techniques to provide a Very Effective Care by conducting workshops on effective health teachings. 6. This paper may serve as a report on patient satisfaction on actual nursing care activities rendered and can inspire more surveys, researches, studies regarding expected nursing care of patients on nurses as health care provider.
