_aABSTRACT. Hospitalization and other forms of treatment place enormous stress on clients particularly in the psychiatric setting. They are often forced to comply with unfamiliar daily routines. Treatments and other procedure that are new to these patients and watchers pose the risk of adverse reactions and increase feelings of helplessness, loss of control, fear, and frustration. Realizing and recognizing that the presence of watchers have become a scenario in the setting of the study, the researcher is interested to know how do these watchers perceive the work performance or delivery of nursing care by the nurses at that unit. It is with this study that the members of the families would be able to express their feelings and perceptions toward the nursing care rendered to them and their patients and thus help them regain control of the situation. Statement of the Problem: The study aimed to evaluate the delivery of nursing care as perceived by the watchers of patients at ACID of the NCMH. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions: 1. What is the socio-demographic profile of the watchers at the Acute Crisis Intervention in terms of: a. age b. sex c. educational attainment d. religion e. relation to patient f. closeness to patient g. family income 2. What are the nurses' performances in ACID as perceived by the watchers in terms of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation? 3. What are the nurses' performances in ACID as perceived by the watchers in terms of the outlined nursing activities by the American Nurses Association on Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice? 4. Is there a significant relationship between the nurses' performance and the watchers' socio-demographic variables? Significance of the Study: The outcome of the study will benefit the different areas of the nursing profession: nursing/hospital administration, nursing practice, nursing education and nursing research. Scope and Limitations: The study was conducted at the Acute Crisis Intervention Division of the national Center for Mental Health. It focused on the perception of the watchers on the nurses' performance in the ward. The study did not cover the activities of the nurses in the community and the nurses' activities at the other areas of the hospital. Hypothesis: The hypothesis stated that there is no relationship between the watchers' variables and their perceived nurses' performance. Research Design: Descriptive survey was the design used for this study. This gave a better picture of the kind of nursing care rendered by the nursing personnel and the kind of nursing care received the patients and relatives. Research Locale: The study was conducted at the Acute Crisis Intervention Division of the National Center for Mental Health located at Mandaluyong City. Samples and Sampling Technique Used: The postulation was the watchers of the patients admitted at the ACID. Subjects were selected through purposive sampling strategies using the selection criteria which included: they have at least stayed at the ward for 2 consecutive days; they are able to read and write, they should be at least 18 years of age, and they are willing to participate in the study. Results and Findings: A total of 223 responded in the study. Of the total respondents, one-third (30.94%) belongs to the 18-30 age group followed by the 51-60 age group with 27.80% respondents. Male respondents were more than half (56.90%) than the females with 43.50% of the total subjects. Almost half (42.05) of the respondents have reached high school level and those who reached elementary were 27.80% of the total respondents. Almost two-thirds (29.82%) of the respondents were Roman Catholic while 19.28% belong to the other religious groups. Thirty-six and thirty-two percent (36.32%) were parents of the patients while 29.60% were brothers/sisters and 10.31% of them were husband/wife of the patients. More than half of the watchers (54.26%) were closest to the patients, 23.77% were close while 20.18% claimed they were closer to the patients. More than half of the subjects (57.48%) have a monthly income of P5,000 and below, almost one-third (924.60%) have a monthly income of P5,001-P10.000. In the nursing process, watchers rated the nurses to be performing well in all phases of the nursing process. In the American Nurses Association Statement on Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice, watchers were highly satisfied with the performance of nurses in all nursing activities? As to the significant relationship between the nurses' performance and the watchers socio-demographic variables, age, sex, and religion do not affect the watchers' perception of the nurses' performance while educational attainment, relationship to the patient, closeness to the patient and family income significantly affect their perception on the nurses' performance. Recommendations: The following are recommended from the result of the study: * Activate more researches in the area of psychiatric and mental health nursing; * Strengthen health teachings and health education for watchers and patients as well as focusing on their role in the care of the mentally ill; * Give opportunity and venue for watchers to process or share experiences with one another; * Similar study with focus on the behaved and manageable patients as the respondents; and * Comparative study with the nurses as respondents.
