Statement of the Purpose The main concern of this study was to assess the work performance related factors influencing Filipino staff nurses working in four selected hospitals in Vienna, Austria. Specifically this study sought to answer the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the nurses in terms of: a. Age; b. Sex; c. Civil Status; d. Place of origin; e. School; f. Work experience in the Philippines; g. Length of service in Vienna, Austria? 2. What is the work performance level of Filipino staff nurses in Austria? 3. How do the following factors influence the work performance when grouped according to: a. Language; b. Technology; c. Social; d. Economic; e. Political f. Nursing curriculum? 4. How do the work performance of Filipino Staff nurses relate to each of the following variables: a. Age; b. Sex; c. Civil status; d. Place of origin; e. School graduated; f. Work experience in the Philippines; g. Length of service in Austria? Procedure This study is concerned with the assessment of the work performance related factors influencing Filipino staff nurses working in four selected hospitals in Vienna, Austria, namely: Allgemeines Krankenhaus des Stadt Wien; Kaiser Franz-Josef Spital; Krankenhaus Lainz and Social Medizinesche Zentrum Ost. This study made use of descriptive research. The subjects of the study were Filipino staff nurses working in four hospitals in Vienna, Austria. Stratified random sampling technique was used in the selection of one hundred fifteen respondents. The instrument used in this study was checklist questionnaire. Data gathering was done personally by the researcher. Findings The following findings were based on the assessment of the respondents: 1. The profile shows that 90% of the respondents where female and belong to an age bracket above thirty years. Most of the respondents came from Luzon and have worked in the Philippines for six years or less. Majority of the respondents have worked in Austria beyond ten years. 2. The Filipino staff nurses in Austria achieved a satisfactory work performance. 3. German language as a factor perceived to sometimes influence the work performance of the respondents. 4. Technology is generally perceived to influence work performance at a lower degree. 5. Social, economic, and political factors influence the work performance at a higher level. 6. The Philippine nursing curriculum had a high degree of influence as perceived by the staff nurses. Conclusions On the basis of the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. The profile of Filipino staff nurses like gender, civil status, duration of work in the Philippines and work experience has been divided to mean a significant relationship. 2. The age, place of origin and year of graduation of nurses were not significantly affecting the work performance. 3. The Filipino staff nurses in Austria obtained a satisfactory performance level. 4. Austria provides a satisfactory work condition, environment and remuneration to Filipino staff nurses. 5. The work performance of Filipino staff nurses in Austria is influenced by language, technology, social, economic, political and the Philippines nursing curriculum. 6. The work performance level is affected by any of the work performance related factors in varying degrees. Recommendations Based on the findings and conclusions of the study the following recommendations were made: 1. The nursing education should provide for more socio-cultural and anthropological depth in reaching nursing students. 2. Reference materials be developed to cover a more diverse cultural orientation, film presentation and documented interviews pertinent to the realities of various cultures be utilized. 3. Publication of concepts, research works, theories and insights pertinent to cultural issues 4. International collaboration should be undertaken that are culture can be made known to another. 5. The Philippine government can make strict policies regarding application of nurses or any health worker to work abroad to ensure high competency level. 6. Restructuring of the POEA orientation procedures should be taken into consideration to suffice the knowledge of the Filipinos real scenario and what they should expect in working overseas. 7. Interpreneural ventures should be explored by nurses as an alternative to the painstaking experience of working aboard. 8. Filipino nurses in Vienna, Austria should take more time to understand every aspect of cultural diversity of the place. 9. The Philippine International Nurses Association in Austria should take initiative on how to improve the work performance level of every Filipino nurse working in Austria. 10. More research work of this kind be undertaken and widely published.
