_aABSTRACT: The study determined the attitude and practice of nursing students to hand hygiene as basis for the developed, guideline for skill enhancement. The researchers were motivated because of the current clinical situation in the country, the personal experiences by most of the researchers related to hand hygiene and looking for an answer for the researchers' query on why it is that even though students have a strong positive attitude towards hand hygiene yet still many have poor hand hygiene practices. The participants of the study were from second to fourth year Nursing students of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila using a stratified random sampling and utilized a checklist questionnaire with four parts consisted of forty items adapted and modified from Center for Disease Control and Prevention and from the World Health Organization. The statistical treatments were frequency, percentage and weighted mean. Chi-square was used to measure the relationship between the extent of manifestation terms of attitude and practice and the respondents profile variables. Based on the findings of the study, it showed that there is a high frequency and percentage distribution between second year students compare to the population of the fourth year students. It also shows that there are more female respondents compare to male in terms of sex differences. Moreover, the respondents extent of manifestation revealed that based on attitude and practice, their general weighted mean falls on the very high extent of manifestation. With regards to the factors that perceived by the respondents, as factor hindrance in performing hand hygiene the highest frequency is that sinks are inconveniently located. While insufficient time for hand hygiene and priority of care falls to second and third rank respectively. Thus, it was inferred that there is a significant relationship between the extent of manifestation to hand hygiene and the respondents when they are grouped according to their profile variables. Therefore, in the development of the guideline for skill enhancement of this study, the three lowest ranks for practice and attitude, and the three highest ranks for the factors were acquired and the following results were. For the extent of practice, the three lowest ranks respectively were: before and after touching own eyes, nose, mouth, or hair, on typical work shifts using soap and water more often and before and after removing gloves. For the attitude, the three lowest ranks respectively were: prefer alcohol based hand rubs had been used. The three highest ranks for the factors that hinder the performance of hand hygiene were the following: sinks are inconveniently located; insufficient time for hand hygiene, and priority of care (i.e. the patient's needs are given priority over hand hygiene respectively.
