_b _b _c _aABSTRACT: In the Philippines, cervical cancer in the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women (DOH, 2004). According to the Philippine Cancer Facts and Estimates (2005), 7,277 new cases and 3,807 deaths due to cervical cancer were estimated to have occurred. This meant that there were approximately 10 Filipino women dying each day due to cervical cancer. This is mainly due to lack of awareness of the disease among Filipino women. Through pap smear the occurrence and he fatalities brough by cervical cancer is prevented, if not, decreased. The relevance of this procedure is great and beneficial for women especially for mothers, but still, women are lacking knowledge about it. The study was made with the goal of assessing the level of awareness of women regarding Pap smear, also this study is intended to answer questions regarding the factors that will effect the level of awareness of the respondents about Pap smear. The study was conducted at Barangay 124, Zone 10, District 1, Balut, Tondo, Manila. Specifically, the respondents profile are classified in terms of age, educational attainment, family income, occupation, marital status, information sources and family history of cervical cancer. The descriptive survey research design was used in the conduction of the study. Purposive sampling technique was also utilized to select and quality their respondents. The survey was done with the use of a self-made questionnaire that was checked and validated by registered midwives. Statistical treatments that were used to interpret data were frequency and percentage distribution, weighted mean average, T-test and Anova. The findings showed that the Family History of Cervical Cancer comprised of twenty-five (25) respondents has the highest frequency and rank Second to the ranking is the Educational Attainment with twenty-four (24) respondents. For the third, twenty three (23) respondents correspond to Information Sources. Income of the Family ranked fourth which comprised of twenty-one (21) respondents constitute the fifth rank which is Occupation. On the other hand, the frequency of respondents who considered age as an affecting factor is eighteen (18), thus places age as the sixth factor. Lastly, fifteen (15) respondents answered marital status, placing, placing it to the seventh rank. The important findings in this study includes that age, educational attainment, family history of cervical cancer are the factors that affect the level of awareness of the respondents about Pap smear. With these results, the researchers concluded that the factors; age, educational attainment, family income, occupation, and family history of cervical cancer showed significant difference unlike marital status and information sources who showed no significant difference. With the gathered data, the researchers recommend that health care professionals to continue their strong advocacy for information dissemination about Pap Smear; The mothers should be informed about the procedures, benefits and results of Pap smear; and; and lastly, to plan a quarterly community health teaching at the barangay level and at most having house-to-house teaching to ensure proper and sufficient delivery of information about Pap smear to mothers who do not have time to consult at health centers or lying-ins due to financial and work constraints. _u |
