_b _b _c _aABSTRACT: Cigarette smoking has been identified to be one of the most common forms of recreational drug use that is practiced by over one billion people in the majority of all human societies. This wide spread social habit is so multifaceted that such behavior is seen being displayed by people from different walks of life, by individuals from different developmental age, gender and social status. The practice of the said maladaptive behavior is not confined to individuals outside the umbrella of healthcare system but is also observed to a special population who take their puffs in places nearby hospital premises and hospital comfort rooms. This special population consists of members of health care profession bestowed with the responsibilities to advocate lifestyle change toward a state of optimum health - the smoking public hospital based nurses. Nurses are the front liners in assertion of sound medical advices and provisions of supplemental health teachings. As a primary source of information to its recipients of care, nurses are bounded to be health behavior role models as bid by the nursing profession. Having an average level of knowledge with regards to basic facts on cigarette smoking, undecided or neutral perceptions on their own smoking behaviors and role as health promoter, and smoking practices that are carries in the work areas, smoking nurses are still able to perform their health promotion responsibilities specific to smoking cessation on an average level being able to render health promoting interventions often or on six out of ten occasion basis. It has been found that there is no significant relationship between the smoking nurses health promotion performance and their level of knowledge, perceptions and smoking practices. _u |
