_aABSTRACT: Elderly care is the fulfillment of the special needs and requirements that are unique to senior citizen and health care professionals must have adequate skills in meeting these needs. This study aimed to determine the care rendered to elders by nurses in nursing homes and family in the traditional home setting as a basis for developing a guideline for elderly care. Specifically, it aimed to determine the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender and civil status; the quality of care given by nurses and family in terms of psychological, social and spiritual aspects of care; whether there is a significant difference between the care rendered by nurses in the nursing homes and by the family in traditional home setting as evaluated by the elders, a significant relationship between the demographic profile of the respondents and the care rendered to them by the nurse and by the family; the strengths and weaknesses of the different areas of care according to elders in nursing homes and elders in the traditional home setting; and the guidelines that can be developed for elderly care in both settings. The descriptive-evaluative method of research was used in the completion of the study. The purposive sampling technique was utilized to select the respondents. The researcher-constructed questionnaire consists of two sets: one for the elders in a nursing home and the other for the elders in the traditional home setting. Such questionnaire was submitted to experts for validation. Thirty (30) respondents participated in the conduct of the study. Statistical treatments used were frequency and percentage distribution, weighted mean and ranking, chi-square and Pearson R. The findings showed that in the nursing home, majority belongs to the 76-85 age brackets, are female and married. The quality of care given by the nurses is weakest in the psychological and strongest in the physiological aspect of care. The quality of care rendered by the family in the traditional home setting is weakest in the physiological and strongest in the social aspect of care. The care rendered by the nurses had a computed value of 39.19 which is higher to the tabular value of 21.026. On the other hand, the care rendered by the family got the value of 28.19 which is higher than the tabulated value of 21.26. Both resulted in the rejection of the null hypothesis which means that there is a significant difference between the care rendered by nurses and families. The findings also showed that there is no significant relationship between the demographic profile of the respondents and the care rendered to them by the nurse. All the computed values of care rendered by the nurses to the elderly in terms of four aspects of care and their respective demographic profile is lower than the tabulated value. In the four aspects of care related to the demographic profile, the findings showed that all calculated values are below tabular values except for the relationship between the care rendered by the family in terms of their social needs and respective age. With the findings and conclusions noted, the researchers have recommendations for nursing home administrators to reconstruct programs in providing elderly care; for the families to give their elders vitamin supplements and establish open communication; for the community to attend a weekly or monthly program regarding appropriate elderly care; and for the researchers to study deeper the elderly care rendered in nursing homes and traditional home setting.
