_aABSTRACT: This study was devised to assess the food selection of primary caregivers in Intramuros, Manila and its implications to the actual nutritional status of their preschoolers in order to develop a community nutrition orientation that will serve as a guide for healthy food selection of primary caregivers in the said locale. The researchers determined the primary caregivers profile (Age, Educational Attainment, Socioeconomic Status), their present food selection in terms of the six food groups (Grain Group, Vegetable Group, Fruit Group, Milk Group, and Fats and Sweets Group), their preschooler's food consumption of the said six food groups, and the nutritional status of their preschoolers. Furthermore, the researchers tested hypotheses at 0.05 level of significant relationship exists between the respondents profile and their food selection, the respondents food selection and food consumption of their preschoolers, and respondents food selection and the nutritional status of their preschoolers. The descriptive method was assimilated and a self-developed questionnaire, which was translated to Filipino by a Filipino professor and validated by a dietitian and two pediatricians, was utilized. The study was conducted in one of the barangays in Intramuros, Manila, namely Brgy 655, Zone 69. Purposive sampling technique was used to obtain the samples of the study. The researchers set the criteria that were considered in the selection of the samples. First, primary caregiver must have a preschool child aging 4 to 6 years old. Another consideration is that the primary caregiver, either the parent or the guardian must be willing to involved him/herself and his/her preschool child in the study. A total of 40 primary caregivers were taken as the final sample of the study. A total of 40 primary caregivers were taken as the final sample of the study. The study found out that majority of the respondents comprised of young adults, whose ages are 21 to 40 years old, attained High School level and below, and had a monthly income of below poverty line. Food selection of primary caregivers in Intramuros, Manila in terms of Grain Group, Vegetable Group. Group, and Meal Group are found to be slightly Scarce and Fats and Sweets Group are found to be Slightly Excessive. Moreover, selection of Milk Group is found to be Adequate. In addition, a high positive and significant correlation was evident between food selection of primary caregivers and preschoolers food consumption. Based on the findings, the researchers recommend that the primary caregivers attain much awareness on the foods that can aid on the growth and development of the preschool children. In addition to this, they should better familiarize themselves about the food pyramid guide to gain knowledge about the different sources of nutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals) and the adequate servings they should give to their preschool children. To the community specifically the barangay, for them to collaborate with the health center in order to present the results and findings of the study to the residents and to disseminate the output that will serve as a community nutrition orientation, to the community health nurses, for them to utilize the output in their promotion of wellness among the community people through monthly monitoring of the height and weight of children and by guiding primary caregivers in their food selection; to student nurses, for them to utilize this study and use it as a basis in further getting deeper knowledge about the community; and to future researchers, for them to utilize and expound on the findings and assimilate them on other locals and/or other respondents.
