_aABSTRACT: This study aimed to assess the usage of verbal and non verbal communication of nursing students in relation to rendering holistic nursing care to geriatric patients. Specifically, it answered the following: 1. What is the extent of usage of verbal communication strategies used by nursing students in rendering holistic care to geriatric patients in terms of: a) Informing b) Interview b.1. Open-ended questions b.2. Direct questioning c.2 Clarifying 2. What is the extent of usage of non-verbal communication strategies used by nursing students in rendering holistic nursing care to geriatric patients in terms of: a) Therapeutic touch b) Listening c) Facial expression d) Body language e) Silence 3. Is there a significant relationship between non-verbal and verbal communication in rendering holistic care to geriatric patients? Participants of the study were the fourth year nursing students or the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, College of Nursing. The researchers utilized the descriptive design method. The researchers developed a 30-item questionnaire divided into two II is for the nonverbal communication consisting of 15-item questions, this was based from the gathered related literature and studies. Four-point Likert Scale was used by the respondents in answering the questionnaire. Probability Sampling (multi-stage sampling) was used to select the respondents based on the criteria set. One hundred two fourth year nursing students passed the criteria and became the respondents. Moreover, for the statistical treatment of the study, it was revealed that the respondents have a good and very good extent of usage of verbal and nonverbal communication in rendering holistic care to geriatric patients. There are no problems encountered by the respondents with respect to the usage of verbal and nonverbal communication in rendering holistic care to geriatric patients. Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: In the light of the findings, there was a significant relationship between and among the verbal and nonverbal communication of the nursing students in rendering holistic care to geriatric patients. The respondents were homogenous in their choice that Informing, direct questioning and clarifying are their mostly used verbal communication strategies in dealing with their geriatric patients. Furthermore, interviewing and using open-ended questions were moderately used compared to the above mentioned. On the other hand, only therapeutic was moderately practice by the respondents while the four remaining kinds of nonverbal communication were mostly exercised. On the basis of the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations were offered: This study may serve as a motivation to all nursing students to continue practicing both the verbal and nonverbal communication skills in rendering holistic care to geriatric patients. Thus, this will help the students to foster an effective nurse-patient interactions which will assist the rendering of care to the elderly. The faculty of nursing may use this study as a basis to continue teaching communication skills to nursing student especially when they care for the elderly. Also, the faculty of nursing should continue in assisting the nursing students in providing holistic care to geriatric patients through the use of both verbal and nonverbal communication skills. The academe/school of nursing should use this study as a basis for sustaining the tradition of training the communication skills of nursing students towards producing not only academically good nurses but also effective communicators whatever will be the setting, time or situation given. This also helps the academe to generate highly in-demand and globally nurses because of their distinctive edge in communicating and rendering quality nursing care among other nurse. The researchers recommend to all the caregivers to utilize both verbal and nonverbal communication skills in rendering care to geriatric patients. This helps the care givers to provide a more effective caring to their elderly client as well as it will minimize conflicts and misunderstandings between the care giver and their client. This also helps the caregivers to foster a more effective relationship between their clients. This study may serve as a basis for the officials of geriatric institutions to enhance the communication skills of their staff in taking care of their geriatric clients in using both verbal and nonverbal communication skills. This will also help them to improve the quality of care they render to their clients. This study serves as a guide for future study regarding the same subject matter. It will also stand as future reference for further study in the following school year. It could also be a basis for enhancing the communication skills of other health related professionals when it comes to dealing with geriatric patients.
