What preventive measures against HIV that can be enhance based on the results of the study's? The study was concerned with the analysis of the extent of HIV related knowledge and practices of male homosexuals as they form a basis for an enhancement program that will improve their preventive measures towards HIV. This study employed the use of descriptive method and purposive or judgmental sampling where 50 homosexuals served as respondents. The instrument utilized utilized in the study was an adopted questionnaire which was modified by the researchers. The extent of knowledge and practices of the respondents was determine, the questionnaire used the four-point numerical Likert Scale. Independence of HIV related knowledge and practices on the socio-demographic profile of the respondents, chi-square test of independence was utilized using the following parameters for evaluation. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to compute and analyze data. The findings of the study revealed that: 1. The male homosexuals in Manila were generally single and the age bracket of the respondents was 18-30 years old. The group generally composed of young adults. Majority of the respondents educational attainment were college level and Roman Catholics. 2. The male homosexuals have greater extent of understanding with regards to HIV related knowledge, however, certain gaps were found. In disease process, there is still confusion over the difference in length of time the virus lives in the body and the time of appearance of the symptoms. Exercise is still believed as a preventive measure, Persons who don't involve themselves to sexual acts are less to acquire HIV because there are also other means of acquiring the infection, i.e. blood transfusion and sharing of needles or syringes. Misconceptions on casual contacts such as using the toilet after someone with HIV has used it, being exposed to a HIV patients cough or sneeze, sitting next to a person who has HIV and through mosquito bites, as ways of transmission of the disease still exists. 3. Practices of male homosexuals towards HIV related preventive measures revealed. Generally, there are male homosexuals whose preventive measures are manifested towards practicing safer sex. Greatest extent of practice is perceived towards being very careful with whom they have sex with. Although intended preventive behavior manifested a generally extent of practice, certain issues remained to be weakly perceived namely getting themselves distant with infected people. Only a few numbers of the respondents attends or have attended seminars that talks about HIV. 4. Disease process is dependent on age, religion and on highest educational attainment. Prevention is independent on age and highest educational attainment; however, it is dependent when it comes to religion. Transmission is dependent on highest educational attainment and religion; on the other hand, it is independent on age. 5. Practices regarding adoption of a healthful lifestyle is independent on age but is dependent on the highest educational attainment and religion of the respondents. Intended preventive behavior is independent on age but is dependent on the highest educational attainment and on religion. 6. The proposed HIV preventive measures for male homosexuals in Metro, Manila based its foundation on the findings of the study with resultant low scores and ranks along the aspects of knowledge and practices. Based on the findings, it is concluded that a HIV preventive measures is indeed necessary to enhance preventive behavior of male homosexuals, therefore, it is recommended among other things that the enhancement of preventive measures be implemented.
