_aABSTRACT: To improve the nursing students knowledge, skills, and values associated with caring to patients and their family, they have to attend RLE (Related Learning Experience) at the clinical area. One of the first Related Learning Experiences a nursing student will encounter is exposure to lying in clinics, delivery rooms, and neonatal units, where they are assigned to provide a quality health education such as mother class. And this is what the study is all about. The study aimed to evaluate the level of competence in terms of different key areas of responsibility in the provision of health education of junior nursing students with regards to their exposure in maternal and neonatal units. Moreover, it seeks to provide a suggested Guideline in Performing Maternal and Child Health Education. Also, the study addresses the identified health teaching needs of the clients and the problems encountered by the respondents in the provision of health education. It specifically answer the following questions. What is the demograhic profile of the respondents in terms of gender and grade in Maternal and Child Nursing I; What is the level of the competence of the respondent in providing health education based on their self-evaluation and Clinical Instructors evaluation in terms of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation; Is there a significant relationship between the demographic profile and the level of competence of the respondents in providing health education?; Is there a significant difference between the self-evaluation of the respondents and their Clinical Instructors evaluation on their level of competence in terms of health education? The respondents of the study were PLM junior nursing students who are currently attending clinical duty at the Obstetric Ward in different hospitals such as Tondo Medical Center (TMC), Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center (GABMMC) and Ospital ng Sampaloc. As well as the Clinical Instructors who handled the said students. The study only concentrated in Health Education domain from the Commission on Higher Education's (CHED) Eleven (11) Key Areas of Responsibility since it is the most important responsibility of nurses in providing health. Purposive sampling technique was utilized for the study to obtain information from the respondents because the study was limited only to junior nursing students. Descriptive survey method was used to obtain the level of competence of the respondents. The total number of respondents was one hundred twenty-nine (129). They were the junior nursing with obstetric ward exposure during the first semester of school year 2009-2010. In the students self evaluation and the other is for the Clinical Instructors evaluation to the students. Refer to Chapter III for more detailed information about the methods used in the study. Base from the findings of the study, it proved that there is really a significant relationship between the demographic profile and level of competence of the respondents in providing health education. Moreover, it also confirmed that there is no significant difference between the self evaluation of the respondents and their Clinical Instructors evaluation on their level of competence in terms of health education.
