_b _b _c _aABSTRACT: This study entitled Level of Understanding and Extent of Application of Knowledge Regarding Mechanical Ventilator: An Assessment aims to determine the significant relationship between the level of understanding and the extent of application of knowledge regarding mechanical ventilator of fourth year PLM nursing students. Specifically this study answer the level of understanding and the extent of application of knowledge with the use of Wiggins and McTighe's Six Facets of Understanding. The researchers used descriptive research design. Descriptive design summarizes the status of phenomena observed within the natural environment and without any manipulation of the independent variable. This study was limited to 40 students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila under the College of Nursing, mainly the fourth year students. The criteria in selecting the respondents were that the students should (1) have experienced a clinical rotation in the critical care units and (2) handled at least one mechanically ventilated patient. In order to determine the relationship of the level of understanding and the extent of application of knowledge regarding mechanical ventilator, two sets of questionnaires were utilized. The first set focused on the assessment of the students level of understanding based on Wiggins and McTighe's Six Facets of Understanding with each facet consisting of four items. The other set was centered on the extent of application of knowledge regarding mechanical ventilator specifically on the purpose and indication, operation, troubleshooting and weaning. The researchers used the Likert Scale wherein the respondents rated the survey form. The statistical treatments utilized were frequency, weighted mean, and Pearson correlation coefficient. The researchers concluded that based on Wiggins and McTighe's Six Facets of Understanding, the respondents have a high level of understanding with regards to their knowledge on mechanical ventilator while a highly satisfactory performance in terms of their extent of application of knowledge. Lastly, at 0.05 level of significance, the computed value (r = .27), revealed that there is a negligible positive relationship between the level of understanding and the extent of application of knowledge. It implies that the level of understanding does not considerably affect the extent of application student nurses regarding mechanical ventilators. Therefore, the null hypothesis is accepted. There is no significant relationship between the level of understanding and extent of application of knowledge, thus, it does not considerably affect the extent of application student nurses regarding mechanical ventilators. The researchers highly recommend that the future researchers to include the clinical instructors in the conduct of their study. This is to verify the information given by the students in terms of in knowledge and application. Thus, this would also help in giving greater strength on the future studies. _u |
