_aABSTRACT: The Philippine Nursing Licensure Exam is a 500-item multiple choice exam to test basic nursing level competency which considers the objectives of the nursing curriculum, the broad areas of nursing and other related disciplines and competencies. Such examination also assesses the capacity of graduate nurses in safely and effectively applying their knowledge and skills all at the same time in response to patient care and management. Government data showed that the number of nursing students went up sharply from 30,000 in year 2000 to 450,000 in 2007 and is continuously increasing up to the present. However, a drastic decline of board passers over time is very evident. The Nursing Licensure Examination last November 2009 has recorded the lowest passing percentage of passers according to Philippine Regulatory Commission (PRC). Of the 94,462 board takers only 37,627 have passed the exam or a passing percentage of 39,77% and of those who passed , more than 10,000 were repeaters which meant that only about 26,000 passed on their first attempt. PRC records showed a steady decline where the passing rate in 2008 was 44.5% and 48% in 2007. Considering this, one of the frequently discussed issues is how prepared are those examinees in taking the said exam. In view of this, the researchers conducted this study with utmost interest of determining the academic preparedness of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila College of Nursing students of Batch 2012 as an important factor that will dictate whether they will pass the forthcoming 2012 Nurse Licensure Examination. This study focused on the academic aspects of the students learning. The instrument that was used in gathering information is a simulated Nurse Licensure Examination that was adapted and modified from a compilation of the previous board examinations by the Review Center for Allied Professions (RCAP). It is a five-part examination which consists of the five (5) Nursing Practice areas encompassing the 11 Key Areas of Responsibility based from the Board of Nursing of the Professional Regulation Commission. The five sets of examination were also designed to be taken for 2 consecutive days of October 2011. The target respondents of this study were the 110 graduating students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila College of Nursing including the seven (7) member of the research team. The study was limited only to enrolled students who completed all the nursing academic subjects from the first semester of second year until the first semester of fourth year. The data gathered and treated based on the instrument that was used and has been analyzed using the formula for the mean. The level of preparedness of the PLM-CN Batch 2012 students in taking the Nurse Licensure Examination was computed through the standard transmutation formula and computed for the general weighted mean. The obtained general weighted mean was compared against the frequency and percentage distribution table, describing the extent of preparedness corresponding to a certain percentage rate, which was adopted from the PLM-CN prescribed rating system. On the other hand, areas of strength and weakness were determined by getting the mean average in each key area of responsibilities and compared against the standard set by the researchers by which a key area of responsibility shall only be considered as strength if and only if 75% of the total examinee population would get the correct answers for each questions under area of responsibility and divided to the total number of items corresponding to the number of items allotted for that specific key area of responsibility. The study found out that the overall extent of academic preparedness of PLM-CN batch 2012 fell under the Unprepared bracket with the computed average mean score of 73.4%. It was only for Nursing Practice I that the batch fell under the Mildly Prepared bracket with an average mean of 76.82%. However, for the of the nursing practices II-V, the batch fell under the Unprepared bracket with the following mean averages 71.19%, 73.12%, 70.93% and 74.92%, respectively. On the on the hand, the determined strengths for Nursing Practice I were Research, Ethico-Moral Spiritual Responsibility, Legal Responsibility, and Records Management. For Nursing Practice V, the areas of strength were Quality Improvement and Records Management. For the rest of the Nursing Practices II-IV, no strengths were demonstrated, hence, the rest were considered as areas of weakness.
