_aABSTRACT: This study was conducted to determine the significant relationship between the extent of nurses clinical practice evaluated by the head nurse and the level of satisfaction among the relatives of critically ill patient. This study specifically aimed to answer four questions. These are the extent of nurses clinical practice in terms of cognitive skill, interpersonal skill and technical skill, the level of satisfaction among relatives of critically ill patients in terms of Maslow's hierarchy of needs specifically the psychologic needs, safety and security, love and belongingness and self - esteem, the significant relationship between the extent of nurses clinical practice and the level of satisfaction among relatives of critically ill patients, and the result's implication on nursing practice. The descriptive-correlational method was utilized in the study. It was localized at Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center. This study had two sets of respondents; the head nurse of the intensive Care Units and the relatives of the critically ill patients. The head nurse evaluated the staff nurses that are currently employed at the said hospital for more than 6 months; working in the intensive care unit; technically (including monitoring and recording vital signs, computer literate, can manage medical equipment and can give medication especially injections effectively and properly) and interpersonally (can verbally and non-verbally promote activities and interact with the patient efficiently and in a well-mannered way) skilled, they have critical thinking skills. The criteria for selecting the relatives of the critically ill patients in the NICU, PICU, IMICU, SICU, and CICU will be; that they are conscious and coherent, they are able to read and write, that they are 18 years old and above and are willing to participate. Data were gathered using researcher-made check-list questionnaires based on the nurse's critical thinking skills and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and was validated by the professionals as well. There was two set of questionnaires used in the study, one for the head nurse and the other for the relatives of critically ill patients. The tool for the head nurse consists of three parts of contained 24 questions. The first, second and third part consists of three parts and contains statements that pertains to the technical skill, interpersonal skill and cognitive skill of the nurse assigned in the ICU, respectively, On the other hand, the tool for the relatives of critically ill patients consists of four parts and contained 24 questions. The first, second, third and fourth part of the questionnaire contains statements that pertain to the psychologic needs, love and belongingness, safety and security, and self esteem, respectively. Data gathering and collection were done from October 5 to October 7, 2011. The weighted mean was used to measure the extent of nurses clinical practice in terms of cognitive skills, interpersonal skills and technical skills in congruence to the level of satisfaction among relatives of critically ill patients in terms of Maslow's hierarchy of needs in terms of psychologic needs, love and belongingness, safety and security and self-esteem. Lastly, a Pearson r Correlation of Coefficient with Student's t-test was used to know if there was a significant relationship between the extent of nurses clinical practice evaluated by the head nurse and the level of satisfaction among the relatives of critically ill patient. Upon the completion of the study, it was found out there was a very high extent of nurses clinical practice in terms of cognitive skills, interpersonal skills and technical skills. The interpersonal skill was highest among the three, with 4.78 as its general weighted mean, the second was the technical skill, with 4.69 as its general weighted mean, the second was the technical skill, with 4.69 as its general weighted mean, and the third was the cognitive skill, with 4.63 as its general weighted mean. And the third was the cognitive skill, with 4.63 as its general weighted mean. It has also been found out that there was a very high level of satisfaction among the relatives of critically ill patients in terms of Maslow's hierarchy of needs specifically the psychologic needs and safety and security. Other component of Maslow's hierarchy of needs specifically the love and belongingness and self - esteem was interpreted as high level of satisfaction. Among the four, physiologic needs ranked the highest with the weighted mean of 4.48. Safety and security with the weighted mean of 4.44 was next in the rank which was followed by self - esteem with the weighted average of 4.11. The last in the rank was love and belongingness with the weighted mean of 3.90. After the statistical analysis of the two variables, Pearson's r data analysis revealed that there was a weak or low positive correlation between the overall extent of nurses clinical practice and overall level of satisfaction among relatives of critically ill patients with r = 0.145. This indicated that as the extent of nurses clinical practice increases, so does the of satisfaction among the relatives of critically ill patients. The absolute value of the correlation coefficient was above .249 (Sig. (2 tailed) or critical value of r) therefore the null hypothesis was accepted and that there was no significant relationship between the extent of nurses clinical practice and the level of satisfaction among the relatives of critically ill patients. In depth analysis of variables showed that there is significant relationship between technical skills and physiologic needs and also between cognitive skills and safety and security.
