_aABSTRACT: The purpose of the study is to determine the public image of nurses and professional image of nurses and strategies for action to sustain the public image and professional image of nurses. The research compares also differences and commonalities of perception of patients, significant others and other health care professionals. The study was conducted in Benguet General Hospital in La Trinidad Benguet. The study utilized the quantitative descriptive survey method. The Sampling design used is non probability sampling, specifically purposive sampling. 500 respondents participated in the study and qualified in the inclusion criteria. There were 143 patients, 266 significant others and 76 other health care professionals. Fifteen respondents did not complete the questionnaire and were not included in the study. The instrument that was used in the study was a self-made questionnaire adapted from the study of Ms. Ivy Marie Reyes (2000) based from concept of nursing in terms of different images and characteristics of a nurse and from Strasens Professional Self-Image Assessment (1992). The data collection was done on April 28 - May 3, 2008. The software used for the analysis was SPSS version 13.0. Weighted means, Percentages, Analysis of variance and Bonferonni was utilized in the study to test if there was a significant differences between the perception of patients, significant others and other health care professionals in terms of public and professional image of nurses. After the null hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance, the results yielded that (1) there is a significant difference between the perceived public images of nurses among patients, significant others and other health care professionals in terms of Mother Image and Gender Biased. (2) There is a significant difference between the perceived professional images of nurses among patients, significant others and other health care professionals in terms of Physical and Personal Appearance. The researcher based on the above findings, recommend the following strategies to sustain the public and professional image of nurses. Help professional nurses assess their own image as nurses towards rendering quality health care service to humanity by using Professional Self-Image Assessment by Strasen; To have a peer review process to receive constructive and negative feedback on professional performance; Reprogram self image to the desired professional image; Attend Continuing Education/Post Graduate studies, lectures, conferences and workshops and Improve communication skills.
