_aABSTRACT:BACKGROUND: One of the most vital issues to address in any physician-patient clinical encounter is compliance to prescribed medication. According to a publication fro FHSIS on 2008, hypertension remained to be one of the top five primary causes of morbidity in the Philippines. The level of compliance is determined by factors related to patients and health care characteristics. Identification of these factors will help the consultation to be more pro-active, with physicians actively identifying risk of poor compliance during clinical interactions and hence provide preventive interventions. OBJECTIVE: The study conducted aims to determine the factors affecting patients' level of compliance, and their relationship to hypertensive individuals adherence to drug regimen.METHODOLOGY:This was a study involving randomly selected thirty patients from the Outpatient Department of Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center, all with ages 20 and above, residents of Manila and have been taking maintenance drugs for at least 3 months. Informed consent for the data collection was verbally obtained from the respondents. Survey questionnaire is the main tool used in the data collecting process. RESULTS: A total of 30 hypertensive patients answered the questionnaires and were included in the final analysis with average ages of 55-64 years old. Most of the respondents are males. Most of them are rendering an income below Php 5,000. They are mostly unemployed, and have an even distribution of educational level. Most of them are very satisfied about their over-all experience with the Out-Patient Department of Health team. Majority of the respondents believed that they do not experience any side effects from the medications prescribed to them. Nearly every one of them is still compliant even they have normal or close to normal blood pressure reading. On the average, they have moderate level of knowledge about hypertension. Most of them are satisfied with the health team with regards to their knowledge about antihypertensive medications.CONCLUSIONS: After the study, it was found that age, gender, income, employment, or educational attainment, experiences with health care team, assumptions about-side effects of drugs, taking medications in response to blood pressure readings, satisfaction from health care team regarding knowledge about medication regimen. But the knowledge of patient about their condition significantly affects their adherence to the course of drug therapy.
