_b _b _c _aABSTRACT: This study is an assessment of how aggravating factors of hypertension affect the secondary school teachers in four selected schools in District III, Division of City Schools, Manila. Specifically, it aimed to answer the following questions: 1. What is the profile of hypertensive teacher in terms of sex, age, civil status and length of teaching experience? 2. What is the level of aggravation of hypertension of respondents as affected by personal factors such as family history, nutritional intake and other health habits; work-related factors such as: distance to workplace, classroom facilities and materials and teaching load; and interrelationships such as student, peer and management relationships? 3. Is there a correlation between the aggravating factors of hypertension among secondary school teachers of four selected high schools of District III, Division of City Schools, Manila and profiles such as: sex, age, civil status and length of teaching experience? 4.1 What enrichment activities can be integrated to promote awareness of hypertension to enrich Biology teaching? 4.2 What is the degree of acceptability of the enrichment activities in terms of attitude towards the activities, content and development of cognitive skills? Said study was statistically treated with the use of statistical tools such as frequency and percentage distribution, weighted mean and Pearson Correlation Coefficient r. This investigation utilized purposive sampling using sixty four (64) hypertensive secondary school teachers from four selected schools, District III, Division of City Schools, Manila. The findings of which revealed the following: 1. In terms of sex and age there are 54 females or 84.38% while male respondents are 10 or 15.62%. Majority of the respondents belong to age range 51-62 years, with a mean of 51.46. In terms of civil status and length of teaching experience, most of the respondents are married, 51 or 79.69% and have rendered an average of 24.15 years of teaching service. 2. Level of Aggravation of Hypertension among Respondents as Affected by Personal, Work-related and Interpersonal Relationship Factors. With respect to personal factors, the respondents posited that father, brother and uncle have the propensity to hypertension as indicated by family medical history, 79% of whom experienced high blood pressure above 140/90 mm/hg. In terms of nutritional intake, respondents have taken French fries very often and taking hypertensive pills irregularly as well as seeking the advice of a midwife only at the onset of hypertension are the factors often aggravating. On the other hand, in terms of other health habits, alcohol and smoking are seldom aggravating. On work-related factors, it was revealed that 31% of the respondents are extremely aggravated by the distance and 39% are seriously aggravated by the number of hours spent for travel. For classroom facilities and materials, fair to good was the general response. In terms of teaching load, 44% are slightly serious aggravated by the number of classes or periods, and number of hours in school, while 41% are also slightly serious aggravated by the number of students per class. On interpersonal relationship, students relationship indicated often aggravating to the hypertensive teachers. 3. Relationship between Sex and Aggravating Factors of Hypertension More hypertensive males are aggravated moderately significant due to family medical history, smoking and number of classes or periods handled while more hypertensive female are aggravated at a low significant correlation due to number of classes, experiencing heartbeat over 72/minute, frequent eating of beef, alcohol and seeking medical advice of a midwife only at the onset of hypertension. 4. Relationship between Age and Aggravating Factors of Hypertension The younger the hypertension respondents (below 51 years old) the more they are aggravated at a low significance to moderate significant correlation due to family medical history, failure to recognize for a job well done, students low performance, enlisting membership in fraternities and peers who magnify ailment. The older the hypertensive respondents (above 51 years old), the more they are aggravated at a low significant correlation due to extreme fatigue, eating goat meat and hotdog, engaging in night life, seeking medical advice of a midwife only at the onset of hypertension and poor lighting facility. 5. Relationship between Civil Status and Aggravating Factors of Hypertension More single hypertensive respondents are aggravated at a low significant correlation due to family medical history, when they experience headache, pain over the nape, hot flashes over the face and nape, due to number of hours in school and lack of teachers table. On the other hand, more married hypertensive respondents are aggravated at a low significant correlation due to frequent eating of beef, peers who depend by borrowing visual aids and peers who magnify ailment. 6. Relationship between Length of Teaching Experience and Aggravating Factors of Hypertension The shorter teaching experience (below 24 years) the more incidence of hypertension at a low significant correlation due to family medical history, failure to recognize for a job well-done and number of hours spent for travel. The longer teaching experience (above 24 years), the more incidence of hypertension at a low significant correlation due to frequent eating of chicken, goat meat and hotdog, engaging in night life and overloading of extra-curricular activities. 4.1 Enrichment activities have been designed by the researcher and assessed by the Biology teachers utilizing news articles, outlining organization of symposia with experts in developing awareness of the effect of hypertension as well as experiment on melting range and solubility of animal fat and cooking oil. 4.2 The degree of acceptability of the enrichment activities in terms of attitude towards the activities, content and development of cognitive skills reflected that 85 responses or 50% agreed that the activities would help enrich Biology teaching; 30 or 32% strongly agree and 28 or 16.4% undecided. _u |
