_b _b _c _aABSTRACT: The study focused on the relationship among mental ability, academic performance, and personal and social adjustment of selected scholastically delinquent students of AMA High School, in the school year 1992-1993. It answered the following questions: 1. What is the demographic profile of the scholastically delinquent students? 2. What is their mental ability profile? 3. What is the level of their academic performance? 4. What are the adjustment patterns of the respondents? 5. Is there a significant relationship between mental ability and academic performance of the respondents? 6. Is there a significant relationship between mental ability and adjustment patterns of the respondents? 7. Is there a significant relationship between academic performance and the adjustment patterns of the respondents? Utilizing the correlational research method, the samples in this study were 104 first, second and third year students who were identified as scholastically delinquent. The research data were collected through the use of the following tools: the Otis Lennon Mental Ability Test (OLMAT), Bell Adjustment Inventory, and the scholastic records of the students during the school year 1992-1993. Percentages and coefficient of correlation were computed statistically to analyze the data. The study revealed that most of the identified scholastically delinquent students have average mental ability, are males, and belong to the lower-middle socio-economic level of society. Their adjustment patterns with respect to home, health, social and emotional aspects are satisfactory. The null hypotheses on no relationships among the variables mental ability, academic performance, and adjustment patterns were accepted. With recommendation addressed to the students, teachers, parents, school management, and future researchers, the study concludes that scholastically delinquent students helped to improve to the maximum their level of school performance. _u |
