_b _b _c _aABSTRACT: STATEMENT OF THE PURPOSE This study highlights the existing environmental management practices of Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) relative to waste reduction and control and their implications to a proposed environmental education program. It utilized the descriptive method of research using the questionnaire as the main date gathering instrument that was supported by unstructured interview, observation and documentary analysis. Seven state universities and colleges (SUCs) served as the subjects of this research and were represented by 315 administrators, faculty members and students. The empirical data imply low levels of implementation of segregation/collection, transportation, and storing waste deduced from the unanimous reactions among administration, the faculty and the students. The heterogeneity in the observations of the students and faculty members on disposing waster reinforces the belief that the students react differently and in a condescending manner than do the faculty members. The faculty members are generally subservient compared to the students who are rather unmindful of the implications of their ideas when in comes to views on storing waste. In addition, the influences of the numbers of environmental researches, community projects involved in, and linkages to government agencies and private organization are not substantial in enhancing the level of implementation of the institutional environmental management agenda. Therefore, additional management initiatives could better be undertaken within the organization, particularly those that apply to the campus publics. Finally, the study ends with the consideration of transforming the present system through an educational program on environmental waste management that must be implemented in the academic community, more particularly among students. Only these new breed of students could carry out improvement ideas on environmental waste management through their terminal years in the respective educational institution. _u |
