_aABSTRACT: Daniel Goleman, one of the famous proponents of emotional intelligence, declared that great leadership works through the emotions and that leaders drive the emotions positively and bring everyone's best and that the organization's success and downfall depend much on the effectiveness of this primal emotional dimension. Inspired by Goleman's declaration, the researcher sought its veracity through this study. It is to determine if the emotional intelligence has something to do with the leadership styles of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig (University of Pasig City) student leaders. This descriptive study examined the level of emotional intelligence and leadership styles of the student leaders during the academic year 2008-2009. Specifically, this study has the following objective: 1. What is the level of the emotional intelligence of the PLP student leaders in terms of the following competencies: a. Self-awareness b. Interpersonal c. Stress Management d. Flexibility e. Disposition 2. What is the extent of the respondents' leadership styles when categorized as: a. Democratic b. Affiliative c. Empowering d. Moral e. Charismatic f. Transformational 3. Is there a significant relationship between the emotional intelligence and leadership styles of the PLP student leaders? 4. Based on the findings, what student leadership enhancement program may be proposed? A researcher-made questionnaire which was validated by experts with doctoral degrees in Education and Psychology was used. The instrument was also pilot-tested among the student leaders of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and PLP students who are not participants of the study. The respondents were one hundred twenty-eight (128) student leaders of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig. The findings are as follows: 1. The level of the emotional intelligence of the student leaders is high. It has a general weighted mean of 4.17 and described as Often. In terms of the different competencies, the weighted means are: Interpersonal (4.30); Disposition (4.28); Self-Awareness (4.23); Flexibility (4.04). 2. The leadership styles has a general weighted mean of 4.35 and described as Often. The weighted means of the different leadership styles are: Democratic (4.50); Affiliative (4.42); Empowering (4.33); Charismatic (4.30); Transformational (4.29); and Moral (4.26). 3. There is a significant relationship between the emotional intelligence and the leadership styles of the PLP student leaders. The computed correlation coefficient is 6.77. It indicates that there is a positive moderate relationship between the emotional intelligence and leadership styles which is significant at .05 level. Since the p value of .000 is less than the .05 level of significance, the decision is to reject the null hypothesis. The findings of the study led to the following conclusions: 1. The level of emotional intelligence of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig student leaders is high. The result shows that the interpersonal competencies are quite high which means that the student leaders are people and relations-oriented. 2. The leadership styles of the PLP student leaders are very democratic in leading their constituents. 3. There is a significant relationship between the emotional intelligence and the leadership styles of the PLP student leaders. The computed correlation coefficient is .677. 3. There is a significant relationship between the emotional intelligence and leadership styles of the student leaders. 4. Among the emotional intelligence competencies, stress management, self-awareness, and flexibility should be given attention. In terms of leadership styles, longer time should be given to the enhancement of moral, transformational and charismatic leadership styles. Based on the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations were formulated: 1. After the election, the student leaders should undergo the assessment test on emotional intelligence. 2. The student leaders should also undergo test to identify their leadership styles. 3. The student leaders should attend seminars, workshop and conferences that will allow them to mingle and interact with the student leaders of other colleges and universities. 4. Student leaders should host and organize seminars and team building activities for student leaders of PLP and other colleges and universities. 5. Student leaders should be provided with leadership exposures and first hand experiences in the off-campus setting, specifically in the barangays of Pasig City through the PLP community outreach program 6. The output of this study which is a student leadership enhancement program should be implemented during the coming academic year. 7. Studies and researches of similar nature may be conducted.
