_aABSTRACT: This study described the status of private music institutes in Korea in terms of teachers' knowledge of music education, facilities, environment, interest of students, quality of instruction, cost of music education, and attitude of parents. The relationship between quality of music instruction and each of the remaining variables was also tested. Finally, steps that may be undertaken to improve the status of private music institutes and a professional training program for teachers were proposed based on the results of the study. The descriptive-correlational method of research was used in the study. It was conducted among private music institutes in Youngin Do, Korea. The respondents were owners and teachers in selected private music institutes. In order to gather the data and information needed in this study, the researcher-constructed questionnaire was utilized. The instrument was validated by experts. The study revealed that teachers' knowledge of music education is fair; facilities in the music institute is fair, sound proofing of music room was poor, environment is fair, interest of students is good, quality of music instruction is good, attitude of parents is fair. The study also revealed that there is a very low significant relationship between quality of music instruction and cost of music instructions and teachers' knowledge and facilities; and high relationship was found between quality of music instruction and environment, interest of students, and attitudes of parents. After considering the findings of the study, the researcher concluded that there is a need to improve teachers' knowledge of music instruction. This can be accomplished through the implementation of the proposed professional training program for music teachers. The researcher recommended that steps should be done to increase tuition fee or increase government subsidy to private music institutes. This step should be done in order to have a budget for the improvement of facilities especially the soundproofing of music rooms as well as increase salaries and benefits for music teachers.
