_b _b _c _aABSTRACT: The finite element analysis of a hypar shell foundation an assembly of plate elements is presented. The problem on shell foundation is solved by using STAAD-III hybrid finite element method of analysis. In STAAD-III, for three-dimensional plate and shell problems, following are the main assumptions and restrictions: The stresses in the element are evaluated at the centroid. A four-node quadrilateral element with six degree of freedom per node is adopted. The shell element is actually a combination of plate bending and plane stress elements. The stress field satisfying equilibrium is assumed within the element while a displacement field satisfying continuity requirement along common element edges is assumed. Thus, the element is the hybrid type and is based on the variational principles of minimum complementary energy and minimum potential energy. Three elastic springs oriented along global directions are attached to each node. Spring constants depend also on the type of material that contributes stiffness to the shell. The main objective of this study was to investigate the economics of a Candela shell type of foundation relative to that of a conventional spread footing. Practical design details based on the STAAD-III results considering these parameters; variable element thickness and different nature of subgrade are also presented. A review of Candela's procedure for the analysis and design of shell foundation is the basis of comparison concerning relative economics of the two types of footing. _u |
