_b _b _c _aABSTRACT: TEMPCORE is a technological process in manufacturing of steel rebars that was developed in Western Europe since 1974. When it was introduced here in the Philippines, TEMPCORE steel bars replaced the conventional hot-rolling normally cooled steeled bars. Some controversial issues were raised by Structural Engineers regarding the effectiveness of TEMPCORE steel bars, specifically, if it is subjected to various conditions, such as elevated temperature, through butt welding. The objective of the research study is to determine the effect of butt welding in the Tensile Strength and Ductility of 12mm Ø, 25mm Ø and 36mm Ø GR. 415 TEMPCORE weldable steel bars and its design implications when applied to actual conditions. The Universal Testing Machine (UTM) was used in the Tensile Strength and Ductility Test for unweld and buttweld specimen. The test results show that the mechanical properties of unweld specimen to buttweld specimen were reduced. By comparison, all unweld specimen passed the minimum requirements for mechanical properties set by PNS 49-2002 and ASTM A-706M while except for the yield strength of 12mm Ø and 25mmØ rebars, all other buttweld specimen failed to meet the minimum requirements for mechanical properties specified by PNS 49-2002 and ASTM A-706M. After proper evaluation and analysis of all data gathered, it was concluded that elevated temperature through buttwelding reduces the Tensile Strength and Ductility of GR 415 TEMPCORE weldable steel bars in the heat affected zone (HAZ). Therefore, buttwelding of GR 415 TEMPCORE weldable steel bars should not be permitted in the actual construction of reinforced structural concrete, specifically, in critical areas where shear and moment capacities are large. _u |
