_aA cross-sectional study was done to determine if there is an association between parity and post-partum depression (PPD) among 24-40 year-old middle class women living in Brgy. San Miguel and Vicencio, District 6, Manila. Two hundred and fifty-one mothers were currently registered in two barangays and only 108 mothers passed the inclusion criteria. The mothers were given self-administered questionnaires and PPD was assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. All data obtained were analysed using Epi Info 7. Results of the study showed that there is an association between parity and postpartum depression. This was supported by a statistical analysis wherein the computed x2 obtained (3.91) does not fall in the critical region (α = 0.05), thus, not rejecting the null hypothesis. Also, primiparous has a 2.5 times greater risk of having PPD than multiparous. Factors that may affect this relationship include the physiologic and hormonal changes which occur during pregnancy, age and maturity of the mother, relationship with the spouse or partner, lactational competence, and the acquisition of a learned set of skills and behaviors required for supporting the growth and development of the newborn.
