505 _aABSTRACT: Excessive waste disposal in one sanitary landfill over a long period of time might result in leachate, exposing people’s health and safety to risk. Sanitary landfill liners with exceptionally low hydraulic conductivity are necessary to avoid leachate. Accordingly, the objective of this study are to determine whether the local loam soil from Barangay San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal meets the minimum standard for constructing liner materials and to determine the optimum additive proportion of sodium bentonite that will produce the greatest degree of soil improvement. On a dry weight basis, sodium bentonite was used as a partial replacement for loam soil in varying proportions of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. The ANOVA conducted among the ASTM-compliant tests shows that there is a significant difference between the results of various bentonite proportions. The addition of sodium bentonite to the loan soil significantly increased the Atterberg limits, specific gravity, and optimum moisture content. Meanwhile, hydraulic conductivity and maximum dry density both decreased. Furthermore, the permeability coefficients of each specimen were evaluated and compared with the minimum hydraulic conductivity requirement from Republic Act 9003 of less than 1 x 106 cm/sec. The specification is satisfied at bentonite concentrations of 15% and 20%. A 20% bentonite concentration’s permeability is higher than a 15% bentonite concentration. Thus, the optimum proportion to utilize as a clay liner is 15% sodium bentonite and 85% loam soil. The findings suggest that incorporating sodium bentonite into loam soil can improve its geotechnical properties, making it a suitable option for landfill liners.
