_a _aABSTRACT : The morphological effects of 0.05,0.10 and 0.45 kilo gray (kGy) gamma (y) radiation on the height , stem diameter and leaflet area of seed - irradiated (SDI) and one-month old seedling - irradiated (SGI) tomato (Lycopersion esculentum Mill.) were noted. Further, its effect on the duration of the development of vegetative stage of SDI and SGI was also studied. Significant morphologic changes were observed in both SDI and SGI plants were significantly reduced ( ps0.05) with evident lateral and profuse branching, respectively. The 0.05 k Gy SDI tomatoes became significantly taller (ps0.05) in height than the other treatments. The SGI tomatoes were also significantly affected (ps0.05) morphologically, manifested by stunted growth, small stem diameter and leaf deformities, and eventually died without completing the vegetative stage. While the seedling - irradiated tomatoes failed to develop fully and died after 7 weeks from sowing, the seed -irradiated plants completing the vegeative stage. Duration of the vegetative development was significantly shorter (ps0.05) in 0.05 SDI among other treated groups. The SDI tomatoes were less radiosensitive compared to the SGI tomatoes.
