_a _aABSTRACT : This study determined the presence of Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) and Hepatitis B Core Antibody (HBcAb) among prospective blood donors in selected hospitals in Metro Manila. HBsAg and HBcAb are serologic markers for he presence of Hepatitis B virus infection. Philippine Law requires the testing of HBV for the presence of HBsAg only. Research showed that donors who are non-reactive to HBsAg but positive for HBcAb are allowed to donate blood. These donors may be in the window phase of HBV infection or have been cured of HBV. Testing for the presence of HBsAg alone is not sufficient for blood screening, HBsAg should be accompanied by HBcAb, so as to isolate donors who are in the window phase or have been cured of HBV but can still transmit the virus. _d _b _c56 |
