ABSTRACT: The proposed study aims to identify factors affecting the present status of competition and to develop a strategic model of selected private colleges which maintain their competitive advantage despite the presence of saturated market in the area. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions: 1.

What is the current status of the selected colleges in terms of: 1.1

Teaching-Learning Resources/ Services 2.

Are the standards set by the accrediting agencies being complied by these colleges in terms of: 2.1

Do faculty/students differ in their awareness/insight regarding the stated variables which affect the performance of their colleges? 5.

What strategic model may be proposed for the improvement of these private colleges? The Descriptive Normative Survey method was used in this study. This method describes the nature of the situation as it exists and explores the course of a particular phenomenon based on established norm and standard (McBurney, 1996). The survey method according to Rivera (1999) is a systematic examination of the conditions or value in order to collect the data analysis of some aspect area or group. A set of validated questionnaire-checklist were utilized as primary tools in the collection of data. This was supplemented by interviews, observation and document analysis. The interview (Bogden and Biklen, 1998), is an important phase in the study because it is a purposeful conversation between two or more persons to gather pertinent data or information, thus developing new insights for data analysis and interpretation. Documentary analysis on the other hand, is a systematic searching, arranging and interpreting of accumulated data to discover its relevance to the study (Bogden and Bikten, 1998). The research environment involved six (6) private colleges. The colleges are as follows: Saint Bernadette College of Alabang, Lyceum College, Regis Marie College, Las Piñas College, St. Francis of Assisi College and San Beda College administrators and faculty for the school year 2006-2007. Purposive sampling was adopted in selecting the aforementioned educational institution, while random sampling was used in choosing the respondents, namely: administrators, faculty and the students for the school year 2006-2007. The researcher used the following in her study: The questionnaire was used as an instrument to elicit personal information and the data needed in the study. The validation of this instrument was done with the help of a research adviser and the various professors in the different colleges. The questionnaire consisted of four parts: The first part of the questionnaire contained the respondent's profile. This part provided the researcher with the background of the respondents. The second part contained questions on the standard set by the accrediting agencies being complied by the colleges. The third part contained questions on the factors that affect the performance of the college. The last part contained questions in the awareness/insights regarding the affect of the performance of the college. In rating the questions, the Likert Scale was used and the respondents were asked to answer each item in terms of the varying degrees in the performance/awareness/insights of the different schools. An interview was conducted by the researcher with the students, teachers, and administrators as a follow-up technique in clarifying some responses stated in the questionnaires. As a source of information to verify the entries of the responses to the questionnaires a documentary analysis was used. Letters of request and endorsement from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) were brought to the different colleges involved in the study. The Heads of the institutions referred the researcher to the Deans who took charge of the distribution and retrieval of the validated instruments. The distribution of the questionnaires was done on November 30, 2006 and were retrieved January 2007. Thereafter, the data were sorted, the different tables needed were prepared and eventually, the data were tabulated and encoded. The survey results were brought to a satisfaction for processing on April, 2007. Several statistical methods were used in this research to analyze and interpret the data. The Friedman rank test-Two way Anova, this was used to determine the rank total (Rj) differs significantly. Another is the Z-test which measures the degree of difference between the faculty and students mean scores of the respondents. The data gathered were compiled, collated and summarized separately by groups of respondents. The responses for each item were categorized based on the specific problem raised. The following were utilized in the treatment of data: The frequency which is the actual response to a specific item/question in the questionnaire was determined where the respondents tick choices. Percentage was used as a descriptive statistics that describes a part of a whole and weighted mean was used to measure the respondents' assessment. It is also done by multiplying each value in the group by the appropriate weight factor and the product is summed up and divided by the total number of respondents. The data were interpreted by using the 5-point Likert Scale Method, as the criterion, which serves as the basis for the interpretation of the data. The salient findings of the study were as follows: 1.

The current status of the selected colleges in terms of: 1.1

--Quality of Graduates.

--Number of Enrollees

In demand courses have edge in the market. Established and well known institutions enjoy stability in their position, which can be seen in their enrollment population. 1.3
