Development of an AI-Driven Robotic Tour Guide utilizing simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) and visual odometry for enhanced visitor experience - Undergraduate Thesis: (BS in Electronics Engineering) - Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, 2025

ABSTRACT: Local government unit (LGU) and small privately owned museums in the Philippines often face challenges such as limited funding, lack of interactivity, and low visitor turnout. These limitations affect the quality of the museum experience and can hinder the preservation of culture. This study presents the development of an AI-driven robotic tour guide for small-scale museums, specifically deployed at the Fr. George J. Williann, SJ Museum. The goal of the study is to enhance visitor engagement using a tour guide robot named “ROAMIO” that is equipped with Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), Visual Odometry, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to facilitate autonomous movement. It is equipped with a LiDAR sensor, rear camera, stereo speakers, and LCD display, and a microphone, all integrated with a conversational AI named “JULIET.” The robot guides visitors along a mapped path and responds to queries in real-time, allowing the robot to provide an interactive and engaging learning experience. Performance testing included navigation accuracy, information reliability, and visitor interaction, with results showing a high satisfaction rating of 4.30 based on the Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ) conducted with a confidence level of 95% and a margin of error of = 5%. The findings indicate that the system is reliable, informative, and engaging for users wherein the respondents were highly satisfied with the performance of the robot. This project demonstrates the potential of robotics and AI in enriching museum experiences and addressing limitations of traditional tour methods.
